Upgrading Ram on imac

I have a 21" imac that i purchased in Aug of 2011. It cam with 4gb of DDR3 ram and I would like to upgrade. I have a few questions, how do i know what ram will work? Judging from what the 4gb imacs come with now, it looks like mine would have 2-2gb to total 4gb. So would I be able to buy a 2-4gb set and install that along with the 2-2gb to give me a total of 12gb? Or do I need to stay with the 4..8..16gb configuration? Looking on B&H's web site they have the memory listed for notebook, laptop and desktop. Are they spesific to each type of machine? They also make different types..ddr3 and so dimm. Are these interchangeable?
Can someone help me out and point me in the right direction? lol

I trust "Crucial" brand for RAM products, and they have a pretty good configuration page for Apple iMac machines:

Alternately, you may wish to contact them directly for assistance. It would be to your benefit to know "exactly" which machine you have beforehand, but they can probably help you determine that too:

ordered the crucial ram from b&h 8gb for $36
here is a screen shot of my activity monitor, this looks like im maxed out correct?

Just installed my new crucial memory, now i have a total of 12gb...what an improvement, very pleased!
heres a screenshot of before and after the install. the second screenshot even shows that i have my vmware running too.

iMac is working great....Just ordered some more Crucial ram for my brand new MacBook Pro, lol.
