Which Speedlight/Speedlite?

I am a new to the world of external flash photography. I have a little cheap sunpak from Wal-mart that is automatic. Lately the recycle time has been really slow and it won't hold up a light diffuser. SOOOO

I have a Canon T3i and I want a really good, simple to learn flash. I don't care about name brand but would like to keep it under $250.
Please Help!

Canon has rebates going right now for their 600, 430 and 270 lines of Speedlights.

Additionally, I'm a fan of the Sigma DG Super series of flashes. The Canon flashes are a better user interface and typically better construction, but the Sigma flashes are not bad in any respect and they are even suitable for professional applications. Primarily they are in your price range and have a very nice feature set at a very reasonable cost. I have 2 - Canon 580EX and 4 - Sigma DG Super series flashes, to show that I put my money predominantly where my mouth is. (To a large degree you can even mix Canon and Sigma Super flashes, including Canon E-TTL II wireless capabilities.)
