I have wanted an updated version for a couple years now. I shoot with a dude at some events that uses a canon 100-400. That thing is magic. I have always been jealouse. I have heard bad things about it. But this lens is pretty sweet. If this new 80-400 is as good as the new lenses such as the 28-300, I will be a happy guy.

I wonder how far it extends while zooming?

Does the 28-300 have good performance?
I didn't hear much great reviews on it, I suppose it's a trade off for versatility and performance though.

All of these lenses are tradeoffs. It is not going to perform like a 200-400. Or a 400 Prime. I rented a 28-300 and used it for a trip once. It was fantastic. Great AF, great clarity and contrast. But the build was not up to say a 70-200 VRII. But you could by almost 3 28-300s for the price of a new VRII.

It is possible that if I had to have ONLY 1 lens, the 28-300 would be it. So if the 80-400 is as good, I may have found a new lens to lust after.

Yeah, I agree on the trade-offs. But DANG! $2700 MSRP on this sucker.
That's some change and then some, haha.

I am for sure. I await real world reviews, that Super ED lens might make quite a difference.
I never liked how the outside of the lens moved in and out on old version. Did I miss it or do you know if this new one will also?
I always thought that connection would be a great place for leaks.

It said it is internal focusing. So not sure what that means for zooming. I hope it means it it does not move. If this is the case it will be awesome for MX.

I have the original 80-400. I like it for wildlife and overall image quality is great. The AF just isn't fast enough for most sports and f4.5-5.6 really isn't good enough for indoor sports. Works OK for baseball.

If the new one has a MUCH more snappy AF, it will be a wonderful lens.
