Mini Challenge #160 - Chairs

edited March 27, 2013 in The Dgrin Challenges
Please note that this is the challenge #160 (I made a mistake on the number - sorry)

This challenge starts now and will close at 10 PM (PST), March 24, 2013

*** Fresh photos are welcome. If you haven't thought about this subject before, please feel free and take some photos of chairs during this 2 week period of time.

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and you post 1-3 images. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Here are some examples:

Great Idea! Pardon my stupid question but would park benches, porch swings etc be OK or do you want to stick to the stricter definition of stand alone chairs. I'm totally good either way I just don't want to stray off on the wrong path.

    Thanks

I'd like to stick to chairs if possible - there are so many beautiful chairs and instances they can be taken...

Nice challenge :D Hope I can come up with something for this. Not a common photo for me headscratch.gif
Kinda confused though and must have missed something. I see #158 and was thinking we were at #160 now since #159 just finished. I must have missed yet another memo. Happens way too often.

When I started to look for chair photos, the first one I came to was (from a hotel in Barcelona)

    x100_4133.jpg

But I don't think that was what you had in mind. (That is not an entry BTW)

My husband waiting for me with a wheelchair after I did the coaster ride in Haiti

    x100_7452.JPG

This was the wheelchair that he was pushing fast so that the front wheels wouldn't get stuck in the gaps between the slabs of pavement, when he came to a bigger gap and the wheelchair stopped dead and I went flying out of it. I grabbed my camera with one hand, and landed on my other hand and my knees. People rushed over asking if I was hurt, and he said (without checking) that I was fine. And I was. And so was the camera.

I'm not going to replace that one.

This was a chair with a needlepoint on it that I did for my mom.
I was doing needlepoint to look like crewel embroidery and I put things into it that were special for my parents. For instance my dad did research with mice and salamanders, and there's one of each, and they were members of the Iris Society so there's an iris behind the cat's head. My father's brother ran the state game farm with pheasants, etc.

    IMG_8088.JPG

Since I did the needlepoint, I got the chair. This is a fresh photo of it that I took this afternoon.

The third one I'm submitting is this one that I took this morning

    IMG_8053.JPG

My mother's high chair from circa 1910 which has been retrofitted with a harness. The doll is one my godmother made me when I was born in 1937.

I didn't take this photo, so it can't be part of the challenge.
I just thought I'd have some fun.

My birthday was coming up, I was feeling sorry for myself, I had knee surgery a year earlier, but it wasn't coming around to well.
My wife asks me what I want for my birthday.
I say, "I want to feel young again."

    So this was my present.

I like your needlepoint work - congratulations :)

    - let's try however, to stay with up to 3 submissions per person, as the rules of the contest state... you can change them as you wish (add new ones or remove some), as you like, until the closing time.

Actually that is a good one - I took it as a real submission mwink.gif

Thank you for replacing the needlepoint chair - it's much better now, without the flash shadow -
and I like the cat too :)

Very nice the chair with the doll as well - nice memories...

*** Last but not least - very funny the one with the wheelchair and also the story behind rolleyes1.gif

Thank you - the toilet one is good, but it isn't really a chair. I tend to be very literal. I mean if you don't even want benches....

Right they are not really "chairs" rolleyes1.gif

I don't want benches here, not because I'm restrictive, or don't like them
    - I do like them a lot and I have some nice (I think) photos with them.
I want chairs here, because (to me) they can be fascinating when shown in the right "light".
I personally like their shape(s) point of view design, and how they interact with the human life and environment.

Maybe my examples are not very relevant, but there are some more here:

I'm not sure that mine do that. A wheelchair isn't exactly a chair and neither is a high chair. The original hotel chair which looked like it was made out of a wood burl or something is more like that. I also had a chair that my great grandfather made for my mother, but it wasn't a good picture, and someone else in the family took that so I don't have it now.

Hey, I think that a challenge is nothing but an exercise - a challenge for ourselves... you don't have to please me. Go with our gout, that - this time - will have to fit the theme I proposed :)

I cannot impose guidelines. I just gave some suggestions, and I know it will be a challenge for myself to try to judge all the entries at the end, because everybody's different and sees/likes things differently...

Gout = A medical condition usually characterized by recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis—a red, tender, hot, swollen joint. The metatarsal-phalangeal joint at the base of the big toe is the most commonly affected area.

That might put you in a wheelchair!

Sorry English is not my first language - I should probably say "go with your feelings".

I apologize - I guess I should not adventure myself too much into discussions.

    - In French gout=taste, and they often say like "I have the "gout" of doing this..." - I spoke more French than English for a while :)

... Anyway, I hope the chair photo posting will not suffer because of this mwink.gif

No need to apologize. I thought you mean "gut" and simply made a typo. I
thought the resulting word was a humorous connection with a wheelchair.
