Welcome to Mini-Challenge #162!

The theme of this challenge will be Overgrown.

Just about every man-made endeavor gets reclaimed by the forces of nature at some point. Lets see that process happening. Personally, I like to photograph ruins, but this could be almost anything, an old truck, gardens, a barn, a ghost town, or anything that shows nature taking it back. I tend to favor shots that evoke a sense of mystery or a certain mood.

I really like the timing of keeping these to about a week and a half (as richtersl did in the last one) - no reason to drag these out. So, this challenge starts now and WILL CLOSE AT 11:59 PM (EASTERN TIME), APRIL 20, 2013.

*** Fresh photos are welcome. If you haven't thought about this subject before, please feel free and take some photos during the challenge period.

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Here are some examples:

Don't know how well I will do with this but I'm taking the 'forces of nature' idea to mean more than overgrown with foliage or knocked down by time into ruins. I do have photos of those things (Les Baux, Pompeii, Avignon and more recently Cumberland Island) and also a bunch of photos of hurricane damage to various places (like a brand new school bus that a hurricane dropped a tree right on top of it), but I wasn't sure that would be what you wanted. Nor was I completely sure about entering gravestones which have been damaged by time - either by mold or lichens or by being under trees or in one case a refinery was built next to the cemetery which degraded all the stones. The process in that last case wasn't visible - only the results.

First - an old sugar mill in St. Kitts - it isn't economically feasible for them do grow and process sugar anymore so the old mills are abandoned. This was fairly recent so the mill has only been disused for a few years and the vines haven't taken over completely yet

    100_2874.JPG

Second - a dock in Swansboro which has been eaten away. Somewhat worrying as we were tied up to this dock

    Image103.jpg

And last, a view from a helicopter of the volcano damage in Monserat -not only burned up, and covered up but also overgrown

Actually, its Woodbine/Virginia Creeper in Montreal. No Poison Ivy! thumb.gif Five leaves, not three.

Down here at least, Virginia creeper mixes with poison ivy, and I see some three leaves in with the five.

But go ahead and clear it up, I won't stop you.

O.T. I'm not likely to even try, in that this is an image taken some years ago when visiting Montreal and doing a photowalk.

It was a joke. When we moved here in 1973, I got poison ivy 3 times in the early spring when trying to clear out honeysuckle and Virginia creeper mixed with poison ivy before the leaves came out and I could identify it.

    Great topic!

I love the bike shot, Don! Something designed to move entrapped by the slow growth of plants.

fvc. Those are really nice - I have a hard time taking pictures with a lot of bare branches - the camera tends to focus of the stuff closest to me and not the thing just past that.

Yea, that is where the spot focus comes in handy. I think these were also taken with a deep DOF so that also helps.

I'm not sure if this is "overgrown" enough. It is an old abandoned farmhouse sitting in the middle of a field. In April (if we're lucky), the bluebonnets bloom all around it and it floats in a sea of blue.

I'll have to search to find anything else in this theme.

Such interesting challenge themes, and already a most eclectic mix of entries.

Of course I couldn't help but grab a pic of what is perhaps the world's quintessential "overgrown" spot on the Planet - the incredible ruins of Ta Prohm temple at Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

Built in the 12th century, Wikipedia has this to say about the "overgrowth" of Ta Prohm:

"After the fall of the Khmer empire in the 17th century, the temple of Ta Prohm was abandoned and neglected for centuries. When the effort to conserve and restore the temples of Angkor began in the early 21st century, the Ecole francaise d'Estreme-Orient decided that Ta Prohm would be left largely as it had been found, as a 'concession to the general taste for the picturesque.'
