Welcome To Mini-Challenge #165: Textures, Patterns, and Abstracts

Welcome to Mini-Challenge #165! The theme of this challenge will be Textures, Patterns, and Abstracts.

There can obviously be a lot of overlap between the three. In fact, it's quite possible to present a single image that is a texture, a pattern, as well as an abstract. Those type of images will be happily accepted. However, the example images below represent one of each, just to give you an idea of what we're looking for. You will need to identify your entry/entries as one of the three, or a combination thereof.

This challenge starts now and will close at 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on Friday, May 31, 2013. (This follows the recent trend to shorten the time frame for the mini to about ten days instead of two weeks.)

Here is an example of a Texture - something you can almost feel.
i-s2ZtDmG-L.jpg

A Pattern could be man-made, could be found in nature, etc. There is a consistent structure, such as this frost covered tire tread.
i-d7srNgM-L.jpg

An Abstract could be almost anything unconventional and eye-catching. It may be immediately obvious what we are looking at, exactly what it is may not even matter, or it may just cause us to take a second look to figure it out, such the canoes below.
i-snthd9g-L.jpg

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!
Happy Shooting, Scott

#1 Texture - this is my front walk where the flowers in the flower boxes were dropping their petals in the fall.

    IMG_8319.JPG

#2 Pattern - this is a 1930's dress where there was a fake belt and the fabric was fixed in the belt so that it would stay in this configuration including the folding over of the end so that it was 90 degrees to the buckle. I wore the dress to old car events in the early 1960s when we dressed in the style of the car. We have a couple of 1932 Plymouths and this was that era of dress.

I can't use this photo as I obviously did not take it.

    #3 Abstract

I always like to see discussion in the MC thread as it evolves. This looks to be a topic that's generating some good interest and unusual images. I'm particularly intrigued by grandmaR's entry. At some point, I'd like to see it in broader context. Looks like it might be a headboard?

I think it would destroy the impact of the abstract to know where I got it, but I'll post the full photo at the end. It isn't a headboard but that is a good guess. It is in a restaurant.

I like that one too and it overcomes the problem of a dusty subject that doesn't just look as if it is exposed wrong or something.

    Shh...

Of the ones posted since anyone last commented

LOVE kentwaller's autumn vineyard pattern. I can see that as fabric in a dress with swaths of fabric diagonal across the bodice. The tower photo is really nice too but I'm probably too dense to see which category it belongs in.

My favorite of Alan's is the tree rings one, although all of his are very textury (to coin a word) but I love how saturated the tree rings are.

The smoke rings and the jelly ones are nice abstract art.

Took me a minute to figure out 'friends' from the title. That's a really cool photo.

I think of the lilac as more of a pattern than a texture. I love lilacs, and would have had them as flowers at my wedding except it was the wrong time of year. I also like the glacier. The blue ice is so interesting - you might think it wasn't really that color, but it absolutely is!!!
