Welcome to Mini-Challenge #168! The theme of this challenge will be Birds! I love the challenge of shooting birds! It doesn't matter if they are flying, walking, sitting or swimming!! Just show us your favorite feathery shots!!

This challenge starts now and will close at 11:00 PM (Pacific Time) on Sunday, July 14, 2013. (Continuing the recent trend to shorten the time frame for the mini to about ten days instead of two weeks.)

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

I love to look at bird images even though I rarely take any of my own. I love your hummingbird shot!

I had to really dig to find any birds that I have taken, so here goes:

    1. Duck

    2. Macaws
    IMG_0638-1-L.jpg

    3. OK...I know this isn't the greatest bird shot ever, but I had baby birds in our birdhouse and the only way I have to take pictures without disturbing them is to shoot through our living room window. This is the mama bird feeding the babies. I don't care if it isn't technically a great shot--it is still one of my favorite bird shots. I love sitting in my rocking chair by my window and watching the birds come & go. More fun when there are babies.

Wow... that was way to hard. I have way to many that I love. I narrowed it down to my High Island trip and still had over 20 that I liked. Some are probably better, but these are some that make me smile.

    1) Reddish Egret near Bolivar Flats.

Interesting theme Jeromy. I don't normally shoot birds so I only have two that I can contribute. Not sure how good they are, but here goes.

I know that they are so many bird photographers on Dgrin (most of Wildlife forum is that) that I am sure this will be an amazing challenge (and we already have a great start).
I do not often take photos of birds but here are the few I found in my archives

I am inclined to value photos taken of wild birds more than ones in zoos and those are harder to get, given that I don't sit and wait for a perfect shot. All my photos are taken 'on the fly' so to speak. So my favorites are not always the best photographs I have ever taken.

My very favorite is this one taken in Peru in 2008 from a boat

    x100_3118.jpg

This one of a snowy egret was taken even longer ago in 2005

    x100_5310.JPG

I have a lot of the wading birds - rosette spoonbills, wood storks, great blue herons etc.

But for something completely different, here's one from the county fair - when this rooster crowed, his eye got milky

So many incredible shots already! I'm looking forward to seeing more. I'm a beginning birder - a "good bird" for me is one that allows me to get a decent shot. Here are three of those decent ones.
