You really have become a birdman.
You really have some colorful birds to shoot you lucky man. This is how I got hooked. A bird here a bird there and then that first egret shot
Time to start saving up for that long glass. If you want I have a spare egret costume that I could send to you (helps you blend in).

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"
Going back for this arvo's light :cry :cry :cry
yeh, it's not like egrets are anything like kava, right :uhoh

Both same light...same camera/lens/operator same direction etc. I took many of each of a tripod with a remote at the same F/stops etc & well & trully a fast enough shutter for a tripod. There was no back focusing going on
Is it just operator or will these things just do this from time to time ???
I don't know the exact answer to why the Kingfisher isn't sharp but a couple of guesses would be:
- Distance- the Kingfisher looks farther away, or maybe just a smaller bird. It's been my experience the farther away or the smaller the critter the harder it is to get sharp features.
- Exposure- the Kingfisher looks a tad overexposed to me. Again, it's been my experience that lighter shots are harder to get sharp. I think you can see this in your egret.
- Then all the usual, wind, earthquake, evil spirits :uhoh etc.
