I just downloaded:

LightZone for Windows V4.0, New Release (June 15, 2013)
http://lightzoneproject.org/content/lightzone-windows-v40-new-release-june-15-2013

... and am running it under Win 7, 32 bit. It appears to be stable on this machine (although very limited testing so far.)

LightZone is free and open-source software, available now for Windows and Linux OS. LightZone is unique in that, by design, it can create auto-masks by either luminance value or color selection. This makes it useful for correcting difficult color situations, like multiple light sources with different color/white balance. It can also be used for scenes of high dynamic range.

Able to open some manufacturer RAW files, even for fairly recent cameras, it can also work on JPG and TIFF originals. (Current camera profiles: http://lightzoneproject.org/node/315)

LightZone tutorials and videos: http://lightzoneproject.org/node/35

LightZone for Linux:
http://lightzoneproject.org/node/322

(A Mac OSX version is in beta test.)

I just installed Lightzone for Linux last night and am giving it a whirl. I like some of the editing features, will continue to try it for a while to be sure some of the things I'm missing is not just a case of me not knowing where it is or how to do it. I normally use digiKam, another free, open source photo management software for Linux, Windows, and MacOS. http://www.digikam.org/

What I love about digiKam is the vast options available for batch processing (certainly handy for resizing and watermarking, at the very least). I also love (and use all the time) some of the many export plugins there are to send photos directly to accounts and sites you have. Eg. Smugmug, Flickr, g+, facebook, remote computer, email, etc.

After playing a bit more with Lightzone, I think I'll keep it. It isn't all that digikam is, but I do find I like how it handles the adjustments, putting them on layers that can be individually deleted, or stacked up one on top of another. There are also some fun effects quick and dirty effects.
