Well It Is Called the Alligator Farm

Hi Y'all,

I'm up in St. Augustine and will be heading out to the rookery at the Alligator Farm shortly. I figured this would be a good time to post a few pics from the farm.

Normally I go in and shoot the birds in the rookery. This year I decided to grab a few gator and croc captures too. The birds roost at the farm because the gator and crocs keep varmints from raiding the bird's nests.

Sometimes however there is a price to be paid for that protection as this little blue heron discovered.

The reptiles don't discriminate and will eat anyhing that enters the water as this soon to be devoured crab can verify.

Except for the occasional snatch of some food the gators and crocs pretty much lay around all day and don't do all that much (this almost is exactly how my wife describes my daily activities). However every now and then they will take a pose for you.

    The gator were just being gators lets hold off on those wallets, belts and purses.

    I distinctly recall the speed with which 'gators strike. I was impressed.

    Thanks Ian, gators don't move that much but when they want to they are amazingly quick.

    Harry, these are great--I love the action captured! All that splashing water shows how fast they can move, and reminds me of why I am so respectful of these guys. I understand that years ago an alligator ate a pony on Avery Island. My husband likes to joke, "never let the truth get in the way of a good story," but so many people have told me about it that I tend to believe it. Best, Pam

    Thanks Pam, gators move fast when food is about. The pony story is possible but it had to be a very young pony and a very large gator.
