Is this too noisy? I went to download free Neat Ninja, I lost all that when my computer crashed. It won't work without a watermark unless I pay for it.

What do you all think?

(I used the LAB method of sharpening and putting the G blur on the A and B channels.)

Exif, Ginger - sure would help in diagnosing what's going on here...

Short answer: yes, way too noisy. You created a new product btw - there are two noise reducing programs: Neat Image and Noise Ninja. rolleyes1.gif

    Hey Ginger

    Yes it's kinda noisy.

I use Noiseware Community Edition which is free and I'm pretty happy with it.

Hope you don't mind but I ran it through there and came up with this:

Which is a little better. Also maybe it's just my monitor but it seems to have some bandingne_nau.gif

P.S. congrats on making the finals over at FM, you got my votethumb.gif

    Thanks, Eric!

Yes, there is probably some banding.

After I posted it, Andy, I thought, "oh, D, I forgot the exif and Andy is going to ask. Then I thought that if it is too noisy, it is too noisy and it wouldn't matter re the exif.

It was probably underexposed. I am making a guess. I am exhausted.

OK, you and I can figure it out from this. I just wanted to know if I could save it. I like pairs. I was shooting a white bird down low and these things showed up. I have problems adjusting rapidly to rapidly changing conditions.

It is F 8, ISO 400, used my 400 mm the whole time, walked for miles and didn't carry anything else, but the exif says the

    EV IS A MINUS 1.33

And that is it right there. I just wanted to know if it could be saved. A bit, I like it. It is cropped, not a lot, but some. I don't know what causes the banding, but I did notice something that looked like it could be called banding.

eric, I like what you did, banding or not!

Oh, on that new product. It was lots of fun trying to google it! I always do that with those two products.

There were birds all over the place at Caw Caw today. But they are far away, so that is a problem, Plus I mess up.

I was so excited about the shots..................crumb.

ginger again (I keep thinking that Steve and others have to dump shots, but I hate to dump things when they are so difficult to get. MILES we walked. My feet will not work again until tomorrow.)

I see banding also. It looks as if you shot through a stocking. It does not look like typical noise.

And so you had to increase the exposure dramatically in the raw conversion - thereby introducing the banding and the noise...

Looks like its from underexposure on the background. You should not be getting this much noise at ISO 400.

    Ginger,
I feel bad for ya on this one. I like everything about it but the problems pushing the RAW image produced (noise and banding :-( Yep, I dump my fair share of shots but, fortunately, I don't have to walk miles to shoot them. Hope your feet recover quickly :D

I've messed up enough shots to have FINALLY (being old, stubborn and lazy might have had something to do with it....lol) learned to double check my settings before shooting. I have problems with near vision so I am seldom able to check the LCD after a shot ne_nau.gif Can't see squat anyhow....lol So making sure I have the right settings is pretty critical for me. I have also learned what I should expect to see (exposure-wise) in the VF for most lighting situations. That's how I usually find out I've got the wrong ISO selected or EV comp dialed in.....lol

Although I don't consider myself a stupid person, it did take me a couple of years and about 20,000 shots to learn these lessons :lol
