How to link to only ONE forum post instead of an entire page or thread

I've often had the need or desire here to post a link in one thread to a single post from another thread. But I've never been able to do that successfully. Others often seem to be trying to do the same thing. When links lead to an entire page or even a whole thread, sometimes I've even given up ever finding the actual single post that was supposedly linked. However, I've seen a few people do this successfully & a single post stands alone on a page when linked. Could someone explain how to do this? Thanks.

Click the post number in the top right of the post. You'll get a page with only that post. Then notice the URL in the browser with the thread and the post number added to it.

Good grief-- thanks. That was easy! I never knew those numbers were click-able. How 'bout posting this info. more prominently somewhere? So many of our links would be much more effective in these forums!

My favorite way of doing this is to use the post and thread codes (*'s added to make them visible in this post:

[*post=1904157]post description here[/post], which looks like this without the *: [post=1904157]post description here[/post]

    This also works for threads:

    [*thread= 239790]thread description here[/thread], which looks like this without the *: [thread=239790]thread description here[/thread]

The advantage of this method is it doesn't matter if the other guy (who's clicking on your link) is logged in to www.digitalgrin.com or dgrin.com, since these links are relative.

Hope that helps and doesn't confuse even more!

Forgot to thank you for this info, David. I'll have to refer to this next time I wanna do this. I've learned how to do this in other forums, but I've had to re-train myself sometimes, as I forget these simple things when I don't use them often. I don't understand why it makes a difference with digitalgrin or dgrin (I didn't even know they were different until about 6 months ago!!!) but I certainly take your word for it. Well, OK, I guess I do see... because I understand relative links a little better now after working on my blog's Navbar. Hmmmm. Anyway, thanks.

Glad it helped. Your login for this site is set in your cookies, and your cookies for dgrin and digitalgrin are separate, so you're only logged into one at a time, unless you specifically log into both. Point being if you post to the domain I'm not logged into and I click on your link, I'm suddenly logged out, until I change the domain to match my login. thumb.gif
