I rarely do portraits, mainly because I tend to be pretty crap at people pictures!

However, this is one of the photographs I took today of Megan - the kid from next door that comes round to ours most weekends to keep Rachel (my daughter) company.

Today, the three of us went to the park, ostensibly for me just to use the camera, and we decided that I would of course take pics of Megan, Rachel, the park or landscape, and hopefully one of Haslam's Parks squirrels.

Believe me, Megan drove us nuts (see what I did there (squirrel?)) but she and Rachel enjoyed the walk and I got a few photo's along the way.

So, anyway, back to Megan, first image. Remember I don't do people/portraits as a rule. Natural light, using the nifty fifty on the 70D for the first time.

This is an absolutely beautiful portrait!!! Her parents should have that hanging on their wall somewhere - her expression is delightful. And even though you were using the 50mm at 1.8 it looks like you nailed both eyes in focus (NOT easy at that aperture!). Photographically, my only nit is the slightly "busy" bokeh in the background, but that's a very minor photographer nit that most civilians wouldn't notice (or care about).

the light is just scrumptious! great energy as well..though it is more of strong candid then a portrait.

It wasn't a candid - Megan found a little stone seat feature near a small stream and sat in it. I just asked her to lean a little to the left, and then started to say silly things to make her laugh.

seems to have worked.
