I cannot fathom how to populate a new gallery with images selected from various other existing galleries.
Can anyone give me some guidance please?

    You can either collect the photos or you can make the gallery "smart".

    Collect: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93310
    Smart galleries: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93308

    Thank you Denise, most helpful as ever.
    Bye the way, have you any further thoughts about:

    I find that "popular", using the link you gave, returns the first 1,000 of my photos!
    Using the popular link in my menu, returns the correct recent few popular images.
    Do you agree that this may be a bug in the SM coding?
    Your further thoughts will be much valued.

    I went to my /popular page and made it "Just this page". Added a "multiple photos" box at the top
    and set it to a number of photos and to "college landscape" for prettiness.

    I titled the box with this.
    My Popular Photos (Click each photo to see larger version) See gallery at bottom for the first 1000 photos.

    I left the regular gallery photos at the bottom in smugmug style so all 1000 can be seen.

    Thank you Allen, I shall try that way of sorting it out.
    (By the way, your website is absolutely stunning! The work that you must have put into this is beyond belief.)

    You can only see my legacy site now, have not unveiled.

    Allen, if you have a moment to look at my site, you will see that I have tried to do as you suggest.
    Just as you explained, I have now managed to populate a "multiple photos" box linking to /popular and set to "collage landscape".
    At the bottom, however, there persists, in the "Area reserved for default SmugMug content", the 1000 image gallery displayed using my default theme. This is somewhat incongruous and redundant.

    Is there no way of getting rid of this redundant display? The old legacy SM did not present this problem.

    I added these to my "just this page" CSS to hide the 1000 gallery view to visitors.

    .sm-gallery-content {display:none;}
    .sm-user-loggedin .sm-gallery-content {display:block;}

    I also checked "open in lightbox" instead of "open gallery".

    Allen, you are a genius with SmugMug! I am so grateful to you for smoothing the way for me.

    It does not surprise me that you are hanging back from unveiling at the moment. To reproduce your fantastic site under the new system must be an absolute nightmare.
    I understand that you are now happily retired - that is a blessing, given that this transformation will be eating up the hours.

    Thank you so much for your invaluable help.
