Square Thumbnails

Somehow I lost my uniformly square thumbnails. How do I get them back?

Go to Gallery settings for that gallery.

In Legacy smug, go to the look & feel tab of the gallery settings and set Thumbnails to Square.
In new smug, go to the Appearance tab of the gallery settings and set Thumbnails to Square.

I did that and there was no change.

Hi jcichy,

Thumbnails are best changed using your tools, not your gallery settings.

I see you've unveiled your new site. So, go to Organize > Organize Site, and with the gallery open, hit the little wrench to find the Adjust Thumbnails tool.

I hope that solves your problem!

I'm intrigued by that statement, Lindy. Why is that the best way? Does it over-ride or take precedence over the other? Shouldn't both ways do the same thing, or do they reach a common goal in different ways?

Is this a change from Legacy? I seem to remember the thumbnails changing if the gallery setting was changed (although it's entirely possible my memory is a bit scrambled!).

I did that and here's what happened. I changed from square thumbnails to original, waited for some time, and it stayed square thumbnails. In square thumbnails though, the thumbnails are I believe original. That is, they are either horizontal or vertical thumbnails. Can't get it to go from square to original. If I could I would return to square and see if they changed. Weird.

I'm confused--- why did you change from square to original? I thought you were trying to get them to stay square? And yes, square thumbs will be square only. Originals will be horizontal or vertical rectangles, if like 99% of camera users, that's what you're uploading. The only way "originals" should show as squares is if your original is actually square, i.e. is from something like Instagram or some other square image is what you actually uploaded.

I'm seeing square thumbs - but I suspect it is the gallery style. Do you have that gallery set to the style thumbnails?

When I look at one of my unlisted galleries in thumbnail style the thumbs are square.
If I look at the same gallery in any other style the thumbs are original.

What gallery style are you using? I just checked based on the question from MakeMeShutter, and based on experimenting with one of my galleries it looks like the gallery style "thumbnails" always shows square thumbs.

I'd love to know if the thumbnails style is supposed to have square thumbs. It seems like it should abide by the gallery style setting.

Since the gallery was showing me originals in the thumbnails instead of square as square was the setting, what I was trying to do was switch the setting, tools or gallery, from square to originals and back to square to see if anything changed. It didn't work. After reading the posts that came after mine and switching gallery types in my gallery then returning to my original gallery choice, SmugMug, the thumbnails were all fine, square. They were square and they were set to square. Not totally sure of how it happened but glad it did. Thanks all for the help and suggestions.

Shawn, did you change your gallery style now? Because when I look at that "Fabricated" gallery tonight, I don't see thumbs at all... it's in Large Journal style or something like that (large photos only, where you scroll vertically). I'm on FF. Very gorgeous gallery, btw! Anyway, yeah, I realized there have been other threads about this thing. Here's one of them: http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=239991&highlight=square+thumbnails & it sounds as if the part of it that seems like a bug is the fact that that style (Thumbnails) gives you a choice, or toggle switch or whatever, but yet you cannot actually make them change to Original. Odd that they appear Original on iPod though. That does not seem intentional, and surely if there's not really a choice, they should be removing the appearance of the choice.
