Middle School Cross Country

Here are a few from last night's final event that leads up to the Mt. Sac State wide cross country race next week. These guys are middle schoolers ages 11-14.

    Yes, she seems quite determined doesn't she. I keep trying to encourage the kids to finish the races with a sprint but it's hard to convince tired kids to turn it on at the end. However, these kids seemed like they were doing their honest best to finish strong.

    Nice captures and nice job getting down on their level, that makes them look like stars. I'm not digging the back-lighting, but if this is the best place you could position yourself then it is what it is.

    Focusing
    I also take a lot of middle school XC and find that I seem to have some focusing issues, I think mainly because our school wears black uniforms. I use a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8. Any thoughts or tips?

    Try a single AF point or a small group of AF points and position them over an area with lines and/or contrast like the collar or logo.

    Yeah. What Jack said. Your kit is super for daytime sports. You should not be having focus issues if you are using single point focus. Have you actually checked your focus system by shooting a stationary target and critically analyzing your image? I like using a newspaper. If I can shoot a newspaper at 20 feet with a 200mm lens and read it, I'm happy.
