On old-smug, I had a bunch of unlisted galleries in a category (Family). Users visiting those galleries (through a sharegroup link) could see those galleries pop up on the homepage because their browser remembered them visiting the galleries, so no need to keem them hidden. This is outlined here: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93261 (see the FYI at the bottom).
On new-smug, this behavior is absent. I have unlisted galleries in an unlisted Family folder. Users visiting those galleries and maybe eventually ending up on the Family folder page or homepage, are lost. No way to get back in without reopening the sharegroup link.
