Caption diff in smart vs gallery

I added this code to the caption in a smart gallery but the originating gallery shows an extra
line break. Are there different rules for captions? Both galleries in Smugmug style. The smart
gallery is just showing the same photo by keyword ... err... video.

Heron Pond <br />
Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary <br />

I tried adding directly to the original gallery and the two breaks show.

In original gallery switching to legacy I add the html tags back in and only one line break shows.

Perhaps in a regular gallery it reads the <span> different and adds the extra break?
