Mini-Challenge #186 - It's all about Plants

.

Firstly, thank you Davev for picking my photo in the Beatles challenge and thanks for running an interesting and fun challenge.

I've taken a look back at the very comprehensive list of previous challenges, 185 of them now spanning several years and coincidently the first of which (#1 BIFs) was set by Davev on May 4th 2008. The series is now coming up for its 6th Anniversary! Thank you Davev if you were instrumental or contributed to kicking the whole thing off - before my time.

My favourite subject "Wildlife" has been well represented over the years, but it seems to me that "Plants" are not getting much of a look in! ... #80 Trees - Aug 2009, #107 Autumn Colours - Oct 2010 & #120 May Flowers - May 2011. Unless I've missed something its been 3 years since any plants and that was restricted to flowers.

So my challenge is thrown open to all types of plants (even dead ones!) in their natural surroundings i.e. not still life of fruit in bowls, indoor flower arrangements etc. So think trees, fruit / nuts still on trees or where they dropped, fungus, crops, seaweed etc. as well as flowers, also macros or semi abstract so long as it is still clear it is come kind of plant. It can be an arty / stylish shot or a detailed Nature Record shot.

I'm not looking for landscapes which happen to be full of plants. Animals (insects etc.) are allowed in shot but should not distract too much from the plant itself - "It's all about Plants".

The closing date I'll set for just less than 3 weeks from today - closing 9pm BST (UK time) May 2nd which will hopefully allow the winner to kick off #187 on the 6th anniversary on May 4th.

Alan.

************************************************** ******************* *****
OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES
1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and YOU POST 1-3 IMAGES. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter. The 1st place winner becomes the next host, chooses the next topic and becomes the next judge.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
5. You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
6. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.

Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post, change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (See here for help).
7. Don't be hesitant; share 'em and enter!

Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round, your first step is coming up with a new theme and starting a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging, start a new thread (again using the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up. It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72-hour window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72 hours to set up the next mini-challenge.
7. If the winner does not show/start the next mini-challenge after 72 hours, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the next mini challenge!

Examples.

I will gladly kickoff this mini. Here are some flowers from wife's garden.

Having a little difficulty after cataract surgery but before my glasses have been corrected - can't always tell if things are really in focus. But I offer three photos. At first I thought I would concentrate on trees

    xb6328.94734_11.jpg

I have quite a few tree silhouettes in the winter showing the different branching habits of tree species. But I couldn't resist this one which was taken with slide film in 1971 in RI (obviously in the fall). Kodak Retina Reflex camera.

    IMG_0115.JPG

I was thinking I wouldn't do flowers, but changed my mind for this one which was taken last summer - my husband called me to see the butterflies on this bush in the ravine beside our house. So they are wild flowers.

And this is a slightly different perspective from all the close-up flower photos

I can see it but I shouldn't be able to. I wasn't happy with it and tried to redo it, but I still can see it so I thought maybe I didn't know what I was doing and hadn't deleted the on line image like I thought I had. So I'm glad to know that I do need to re-submit it.

It seems that most of the plant life in Arizona's Desert is designed to "put a hurt on you"

You can see the outline of the previous leaf on the outside of its neighbor.
