I can get my hands on a d7000 with approx 2k shutter actuations for $550, is that a good deal? Is it a decent body for portraits?

... Is it a decent body for portraits?

Your existing bodies, the D300S and D90, are capable of yielding similar results for portraiture, compared to the Nikon D7000. Portrait photography (in equipment terms) is more about lighting and lenses than it is about the camera body. If you struggle making decent portraits with the 2 bodies you already have, the D7000 will not dramatically help.

my 300s produces much nicer portrait shots then my d90 in my opinion. I'm not really struggling just looking to upgrade from the d90. i like using my 300s for action stuff.
