I went to our local nature reserve in search of orchids but the drought had left everything rather arid, even in the woods, when there is usually a lot of mud on some tracks.

We find that, in our garden, violets will flower in most conditions. So it was in the woods. In one spot there were numerous plants. The challenge was to get the flowers facing in the same direction.

The bright overcast lighting, moderated by surrounding trees, was classic for flower photography.

As for the name, V. canina does not apply to the Common Dog Violet but to the Heath Violet or Heath Dog-Violet. Both these species have blue, rather than purple, flowers. I find separation on floral details tricky but the leaves are quite different.

EM-1, Kiron 105mm, 1/80 f11 ISO 800, hand-held.
