Am I going to be forced to accept New SmugMug?

Gah ... I was able to reproduce with the link you sent me. If I shrink the height of my browser to various (normal'ish) sizes, the caption could go away. The differences in your test site vs my site have to do with the header ... it looks like the header ("Patti and Jeane") push the image and captions all down, and we're not properly accounting for that. Let me talk to the team and get back to you.

(I tried a few CSS tweaks but failed at coming up with something solid)

Until the fix is pushed live, it is possible to hide the map in the info popup with CSS:

I'm going to keep an eye open for leftquark's response; I would prefer not to have unneeded CSS on my site.

I like your workaround, but unfortunately, that only works for pro accounts. At the current exchange rate, I cannot even begin to think of a pro account.

I believe it should work for Power accounts as well.

A major difference in the two systems is that you now no longer get the option "Copy image location" from the thumbnails, which is a pain in the butt if you're wanting to paste many images to an external site.

I just right clicked on thumb in Smugmug style gallery and got the image location. The links that I used to get
from a folder for each gallery was lost but a quick work-around is going to "Organize" where you can R/C
each thumb and get the gallery link.

I get the same pop-up from the thumbs in "Organize" that I get from the gallery proper. I have some pics to demonstrate, but smug's upload is broken.

Thanks for trying to help, really appreciated.

Ok, here are pictures showing what I mean. Right clicking on a thumb.

The "Copy image location" has gone. That is something I use a lot (I used it to embed the images in this post).

If I understand correctly, you're wanting to embed the small thumbnail size images into posts? And that's why the URL at the top doesn't work? Would clicking on the photo, then choosing "Get a Link" and copying the URL from the "Get a Link" work? Or you're trying to do something with less clicks?

Always less clicks. I get an URL an then modify it in the link I post to whatever size I want (Th [which I don't get now], S, M, L etc).

I have a blog template in a text file that for photos I go to "Get a Link", copied the i- part of a size and paste into this.
I usually use XL for popup link and Th for thumb to show on page. Very simple to add a bunch of these to page.
If you don't want the popup just use the <img src="..... .jpg"> part.

    <a href="http://www.photosbyat.com/photos/(i-.......).jpg&quot; target="_blank">
    <img src="www.photosbyat.com/photos/(i-.......).jpg" alt="" title="" />

Here's a place I use thumbs clicking to a large photo. A FlashBadge at the bottom and a slideshow on right.

The "mobile" view of the new smug is not too wonderful. I'm told I am hanging on to something which should already be dead, but at least that dead thing works as expected.

I have switched off square thumbs, the shopping cart and downloads in this gallery and yet all are still active. This gallery was created in the new smug and is not visible to the old smug.

Could you explain to me what you don't like about the mobile view? As you can see below, the mobile view mimics your site, but still looks great, with bigger thumbnail photos, Your Profile and a more modern look.

Thumbnails will display its photo square, however, now that you've switched the Gallery Style to SmugMug Style, you should see non-square thumbnails. The "Download All" button next to the slideshow and buy buttons is missing, indicating that Downloading has been turned off. The individual download buttons underneath the photos and the Buy Button are both there since you are logged in as the owner and will always be there. Visitors will not see them :)

    Hi Big Al,
Could you explain further? You won't be able to see what the New SmugMug Mobile view looks like until you publish. I used a trick in Chrome to show you what the New SmugMug Mobile view would look like.

    Mobile View issues
There are lots & lots of problems with the mobile view, whether in New Smug or not. One of them shows right here. I'd need to have mine in front of me to go through more of them. I hate it that my categories & galleries all show up in alphabetical order. I should have a choice of what order I want my stuff to display to my visitors, at the very least. (It's be nice to have a choice of logged-in order, too, but 1st things 1st!) Alphabetical order makes no sense in most cases, for my own visitors. For galleries, it makes little sense for my logged-in view either (because I often can't recall the first word of its title). We need the option of chronological order, and also the option to have cats & galleries display in the order they're in on our full site! (not sure why that's a novel idea...)

Another issue, which I ran into just today... I wanted to get a link to a photo in a gallery (not a lightbox link, but just a link to the photo on its page in the gallery) to postin a comment on FB. I used to be able to do that on FB using my desktop computer, but never with the mobile view. Well, today I couldn't do it with either one. Yes, there are share links (not the same thing... those go to FB statuses etc, but don't work in a comment). On the desktop, there's "Get a link", which now gives the link only in the comment... no thumbnail showed up like it used to) On the mobile site, I can't find any way to just get a link to the photo in its gallery & even have the link show up, let alone the thumb. Other issues.... later... Oh, PS... I find it very ironic that we have an unwanted alphabetical list of cats & galleries in mobile view, but have waited years & years & still have no alphabetical (or any kind of logical order) to our galleries when we're doing administrative work on our site & want to, say, choose a gallery from our list of galleries in order to move a photo from one to another!!! That's kinda crazy.

The alphabetical list of galleries is from Old Smug. New smug mobile pages are basically narrowed down versions of the full site... the order and content of mobile pages is basically the same as the full site.

Not sure what the issue is with getting links... you shouldn't need any special features to get a link to an image in a gallery... just copy the URL from your browser's address bar. On mobile you might need to remove the /A from the end to avoid sending desktop users to the lightbox. When you say no thumbnails show up, you mean in facebook? Not sure if that's a smugmug issue or a facebook issue... they are always changing the way things work and it always seems inconsistent to me.

Time is running out to get your new smug site up and running before you're forced to. Just pull the trigger, start building your site, and deal with whatever breaks. You're only putting off the inevitable if you aren't building your new site yet.

It sounds like you're looking at the mobile version of your Old SmugMug site. How are you viewing the mobile site? While in New SmugMug Preview, about the only way to see mobile view would be to use Chrome's Developer Tools to preview it on mobile.

The reason I say it sounds like you're looking at Old SM is because the mobile view on New SmugMug should be exactly as you describe: it takes all the choices you've made for your desktop version, and makes sure those same settings look good on mobile. Everything you put on your desktop site will be displayed as a mobile version, in the same order and style.

We haven't changed anything on our end with the Get a Link, so everything should still be there. We also have things in place so that Facebook should pull in the thumbnail and any captions, titles, gallery descriptions or homepage description. If facebook isn't pulling in the thumbnail it sounds like something with facebook.

I just tested this out and although facebook didn't expand it to include the thumbnail right away, as soon as I posted the comment and waited a second, the thumbnail showed up.

In Safari on the iPhone, when browsing a phtoo, just click the share button, then click Copy to copy the url.

I'm not sure I follow this. Have you explored the "Organizer" in New SmugMug? It makes it extremely easy to move photos from one gallery to another.

A couple things... will have to address the rest tomorrow... I have no way of knowing what version I'm looking at. I never get any of those prompts on mobile (nothing about NewSmug or Preview or anything) that I get on LegacySmug... However, most of what I was referring to is visible in the very screenshots you posted of BigAl's site, & it sounds like that's in NewSmug. It's all alphabetical. And sure, some of it doesn't look bad on a huge screenshot... what we need to see is a screenshot that's the size of a phone. No one's phones are that huge. So what we see on our phones is instead this view with a huge font for the gallery or cat titles, a lot of blank space (I guess descriptions don't show; idk... and then teeny tiny thumbs, which could be much larger so you could actually make them out. Do you see how there's space around each side of the thumbs, so that they can't expand to the edge of the gallery or category bar? What it really needs is only space around one of the vertical edges of each, not both! Then the thumbs would gain a lot of vertical height & just be larger overall.

It's just poor design, visually, imo, that does not at all reflect the look of one's Smug site at all. I sure hope everyone isn't stuck with the same charcoal grey & same fonts too, but since I don't know yet, can't comment on that. What I will want is for my mobile site to look a lot more like my regular site, & even in your example of BigAl's mobile, it appears to me that it's just a generic mobile view like everyone else's.

The reason I say it sounds like you're looking at Old SM is because the mobile view on New SmugMug should be exactly as you describe: it takes all the choices you've made for your desktop version, and makes sure those same settings look good on mobile. This was a comment on someone else''s post, & I couldn't get a thumb to show up no matter how I did it.

I've got an Android, & haven't ever used Safari. The share button brings up icons (FB, Twitter, etc.) & no URLs.

From what I heard earlier, there was still the same issue about choosing galleries to which to move photos (that if you have tons of galleries, they're still very hard to find & illogically listed), & that you still can't copy a batch & move that batch all in one motion?

@winsomeworks, this screenshot shows the New SmugMug mobile view on the left compared to Legacy SmugMug mobile view on the right. It seems like you've been thinking the entire screenshot is New SmugMug.

@WinsomeWorks: As bwg pointed out, I should have labeled the left side of that screenshot "New SmugMug" and the right side "Old SmugMug". As I've mentioned before, New SmugMug takes what your site looks like, and makes sure that those exact same things are displayed in the same way, just formatted for mobile. It should look pretty great on mobile.

I incorrectly assumed you were using an iPhone. On Android devices, Chrome (your browser) also has a "Copy" button in its share button (I believe you click the 3 dots, then click the rectangle with an up arrow (for share), then click copy ... but it might work differently on Chrome for Android ... I'm giving instructions on Chrome for iOS). When you copy the URL, you can paste that into facebook.

The "Organizer" is our tool (just click "Organize" when in Sandbox) that lets you drag/drop folders, galleries, and even photos, around in your site. You can select multiple items or just one at a time. You can even re-arrange, edit gallery settings, and more.

It sounds like you would really benefit from one of our "Upgrade to New SmugMug" webinars. The next one is September 16th. If you can make it, it should clear up a lot of the confusion you're having: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1078673-webinars-and-live-events

Winsome, you said, "you still can't copy a batch".

But - SM has never allowed one to copy more than one photo at a time - correct? That is the rule in Old as well. I believe that is a business decision based on the fact that space use, and hence costs, would explode astronomically.

I thought the rule has been, if you need to make copies, make them on your computer and upload that way.

I do wish they might change the number to something a little better, maybe 10 as the maximum. That kind of number couldn't result in too much abuse of the copy option.

Ok, that makes better sense now. However, it still looks like the mobile view needs a lot of improvement. Idk if BigAl has actually published yet (it appears not?) so I can't really compare to what I see of his page in desktop. But I'm sure hoping mine will end up mimicking my new site a lot more than this. Hoping there are mobile banners, etc. because a lot of people would be rather confused if I send them to my site & the first thing they see is SmugMug. I've also truly hated the word "folders" for a completely visual type of site ever since I first heard it. I pray it can be changed; it just makes no sense to me & I doubt it will to my guests either. When you go to an art gallery, which is basically what our Smug sites are, you're not looking for folders.. which to me implies things tucked away somewhere. Many other words, even categories, is closer to how you may think of a section of a gallery, or a floor or wing of an art museum.

Another odd thing in mobile view-- I don't know if this is just Legacy or New... lots of my galleries that show feature photos on my site end up in mobile view with just the Smuggie icon. I have no idea why.

I incorrectly assumed you were using an iPhone. On Android devices, Chrome (your browser) also has a "Copy" button in its share button (I believe you click the 3 dots, then click the rectangle with an up arrow (for share), then click copy ... but it might work differently on Chrome for Android ... I steer clear of Chrome whenever possible too. (& everything Google, except.. yes, I know I'm rather stuck w/ Google in some ways since I'm on an Android!! I just despise all their tracking & other stuff) I use DuckDuckGo for my searches when possible. My other browser is oddly just called "Internet' on my Samsung (it's my non-Google option) so... whatever. All I know is, yes, I tried the 3 little dots at the top, tried every menu & URL I could find, but nothing got a thumb to pop into that comment (I deleted / edited it several times & tried again). I've done that a bunch of times in the past, & always a nice-sized thumb & title came up. Something different is happening when I do this now... see ChancyRat's posts in some other thread... but I'm still not real clear on what the "perma-link" is, etc. All this is making me wonder what "Publish to FB" (which I use sometimes to post parts of galleries) is going to act like next time.

The "Organizer" is our tool (just click "Organize" when in Sandbox) that lets you drag/drop folders, galleries, and even photos, around in your site. You can select multiple items or just one at a time. You can even re-arrange, edit gallery settings, and more.

I know what the Organizer is, but I'm talking about the exact method of finding a gallery in whatever list it offers you. (I pray it doesn't just offer up thumbs, etc. For me, the galleries really need to be listed alphabetically within categories, with something showing me which ones are virtual & which are smart, etc. (something that isn't possible in Legacy) in order to be of much use. And the particular action I was asking about is... copy a batch of photos & move them all in one action. In Legacy, you copy one by one & then move (one or more) in another action.

It sounds like you would really benefit from one of our "Upgrade to New SmugMug" webinars. The next one is September 16th. If you can make it, it should clear up a lot of the confusion you're having: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1078673-webinars-and-live-events

Yes, I hope to do this. Just have to find a computer to use that I don't need to sit at... and a time that works. Do they need to be seen real-time, or can they be seen later? BTw, I still don't know what any of those Preview buttons are really doing. Couldn't there be some kind of message imbedded that can be seen when hovering over the various buttons, to precisely explain what will change or happen or what won't change or happen when they're clicked? We've all seen so many iterations of them now that we have no hope of sorting it out without more information right there while hovering over it. "publish, preview, sandbox, try it, view, check out" etc... all these words... we've all lost track.

Yes, that's correct. I'd just hoped (along with lots of people) that that would change with NewSmug. Yes, something like 10 max at a time would even be a great improvement. The sad thing is, they had the chance to have the Virtual galleries (Smart ones or Collected image ones) take the place of a lot of copying, but it was never implemented in the way that would have been handy & solved the problem of lots of copying. In other words, simply displaying a particular gallery in several categories, without having to actually go thru all the steps to create a new gallery & then fill it virtually, would have eased that. And also the capability for the owner to see at a glance which galleries are Virtual (Smart, or containing Collected photos)... the lack of that is a huge handicap.

Back to the copying thing... there are so many instances in which copying photos on our computer & then uploading them just can't be done...traveling, etc. etc. (let alone the cases in which I've edited them in a myriad of ways on SmugMug or PicMonkey via SmugMug).

Have you never wanted to use a specific size image on an external site? You cannot use the link in the browser's address bar for that...

Sure, but that's not what she was asking about. She wanted to share a link to an image in a gallery... Not alone, not in a lightbox. There's no way to pick a size for that.

But depending on your mobile browser, you can still get a link to a specific size image... In mine if I open an image in the mobile lightbox and press and hold on the image, a menu comes up... One option is "view image" which then opens up the largest display size and the direct url is available in the address bar. Just copy the link and change the size to whatever you want.

For those of us who hadn't added any customization to our sites, we were moved to new SmugMug a week or two ago. No warning, no way back. No chance to take advantage of the eight weeks or so of sunset on old SmugMug.

I'm not particularly happy about it.

There's a reason I didn't move to the new SmugMug -- it's simply not as efficient for me. Take collecting photos, for example. One used to be able to single-click to the same gallery from the larger image in SmugMug view. Not any more. One can only collect from the thumbnail view, and one needs to go through the whole keystroke routine every time -- or have a good enough record noted separately about exactly which of the many similar images are the best one for collecting.

The idea that the UI is "cleaner" or "fresher" but a heck of a lot less useful makes no sense to me. What comes first for me is function, then form.

PS: I don't like to come on here and rant, but this seems to be a monitored forum and perhaps feedback from mulitple people can redirect some priorities.

It drives me nuts how many of the present & past SmugMug designers don't comprehend that there's so much that can't be figured out from a thumbnail, & that thumbs are often useless for choosing. They don't seem to realize that lots of us have many similar-looking photos on our sites (sometimes hidden, too) & can only tell them apart from others by seeing them large, and/or seeing their titles & descriptions. What are we not doing to convey this info to those designing the organizer sections? I've seen it in feature requests, here on the forum, written directly in critiques & in emails... I don't know... all I can figure is they just need a huger sampling of normal users testing out stuff, and then the will to listen to their critiques & implement changes. And also the ongoing will to stop fixing things that are not broken and were already fine-tuned, or were already the result of years of requests! And eeek, no warning about being switched over? That's harsh, and weird. We were always told that when we had to switch, there'd be "plenty of" warning. And yes, I completely agree... function first, at least when it comes to tools. Tools, esp. those that we site-owners are using, don't need to be pretty. They just need to function without making headaches.

nod.gif Yes, I agree. Multiple copies and deletions, for example, would be much more valuable than a slicker looking version of things that already work acceptably. In any event, I'm really more concerned with my site visitors' experience than my own. I'm finding it rather annoying that there's no visitor view in the sandbox and that I can't experiment with new gallery styles without affecting my live site.
