What is this CSS addition for, in Aaron's list of customizations?

As my title asks, what is the following CSS addition for, in Aaron's list of customizations? Is it just something you have to do before doing any changes at all in New SmugMug? It doesn't really say.... (Note: I've done no tinkering with CSS in the new site yet, & haven't Published. I suppose that could happen against my wishes Thurs...today... but my site is in a complete shambles & not ready, so I'm praying it gets delayed)

Add the following to your theme's CSS:

Click on Customize --> Customize Site.
Select "Entire Site" from the menu.
Click on the "Theme" tab.
Click the wrench next to your "Active Tab" to Edit your Theme.
Click on the "Advanced" tab
Click on "Edit" next to "Custom CSS"
Paste in the following code and modify as required

Those steps are not code. Steps 1-7 above merely get you to the dialog box at your SM site where you would add (or paste) the paste CSS code in.

I made a little video that follows those 7 steps to get you there. Please click the following screen grab shot and it will take you to my SM site. Also make it larger by clicking on the full screen arrows on the right of the play bar.

In that video, I chose not to publish changes in this example. If you do want to test drive the functionality of certain code, you would need to choose Publish Now. Publishing Now while your site is currently sand-boxed should not convert your site to the new Smugmug.

The CSS code segments from Aaron's site, or other similar customization sites, can all be dropped into that final dialog box. What you saw in mine is only about a tenth of what I have decided to use at my SM site.

Anna,

I don't see any CSS (or any link) in your post that shows just which CSS customization you're talking about.

FWIW, you can put CSS in your theme, any page you want, site-wide, all galleries, all folders, whatever. The placement depends on what you are trying to do.

That's where/how you go about adding any CSS customizations. If you aren't adding any CSS, then disregard that. If you need to customize your site, that's how you do it.

Ok, thx... Aaron is saying to choose "Entire Site"... should you always choose "Entire site"? And if not, how do you know where? Richard is saying you can put CSS anywhere. No, I haven't done any customizing with extra CSS, only through the main Customizing buttons right there on the main site pages. But it's clear I will need to..... lots & lots of stuff all over my site so far is really a mess. I can't do it until I begin to understand better how to do stuff site-wide & also with that "Independent Homepage" thing. Currently I'm in a sort of MC Escher loop with that & can't figure out how to get out of it.

Related to my title, here's the over-arching question that has me in a quagmire: (I've not published yet) So I was automatically presented with "Copy of SmugMug" in my New SmugMug version. (I had many custom themes in my galleries). I went with it (Copy of SmugMug) from the beginning, but also pretty early on chose "Aurora" as a site-wide theme, or so I thought. (When it didn't go totally site-wide, I tried other ways of doing it) However, lots of my entire categories, sub-categories (or what we now call "folders") and even galleries have not inherited that theme. I want the whole site to have the same theme (Aurora) this time around, and want to choose Collage-style galleries & folders as a default where possible, with ability to switch some to SmugMug style or Grid. I'd also like to make it easy to change my entire site theme if I want to sometime, say to "Beach" or whatever, without having to go into every category &/or gallery, & without disturbing the elements such as logo & navigation menu that are already in place.

My question is whether I need CSS or something to force Aurora & Collage-Style to go site-wide, or am I just doing it wrong in the Customizer? (I'm assuming the less extra CSS I need, the better). Note that I will still need to do lots of stuff to my HomePage that won't be on other pages (mainly, slideshow) and HomePage & some other main category pages are showing the correct theme. But I don't want to be re-tweaking every other page due to differences in theme, or setting each page individually to this theme that I want to be site-wide. I'm guessing I should not have started with "Copy of SmugMug", & I also evidently goofed by choosing "Save for Later" sometimes. Aaargh. this is all so much harder than I thought it would be.

You shouldn't need CSS for this. I'm only guessing but I suspect the theme you want is not showing in the galleries that had individual themes set in your legacy site. The conversion probably tried to conserve what you had. I think the only option is to go through the galleries one by one and set them all to the default site-wide theme. OTOH, you can force all the galleries to collage in bulk in the organizer. Select all the galleries then hit the settings button and choose collage. Depending on how your folders are organized, you might have to do this several times, as you can only see galleries in a single folder at a time. But it still beats one at a time.

One more tip: make sure you remember to hit the Preview button when customizing. Some changes will not show at all till you do that.
