Holy Batman! Change this!

When providing a link to a gallery, if the "Share" feature is used the link
is to a slideshow version of the gallery. If this is sent to a person who
will open the link with an Apple device, the link will not work because
Apple devices don't accept Flash.

A gallery link will open if the link is copied from the https: line. It is
not a slideshow, but it's a fully working link to the gallery contents.

Since Apple devices are a major, if not majority, part of the market,
why not add a non-flash option to the Share panel?

    Hi Tony,

The linkable slideshow uses an older slideshow that isn't supported on mobile devices that don't support Flash. There's currently not an option to provide a link that directly opens a slideshow for mobile devices.

If you'd like to ensure that all recipients can view the gallery, I would recommend that you give out the regular gallery link. In the gallery, visitors will be able to click on the slideshow button to view a slideshow regardless of the device used.

I thought I made it clear that I understand how to provide a gallery link
    that works with Apple devices.

What I am suggesting is the addition of an option in the SHARE panel for
a non-flash link. Be consistant and put all the options in one place. Or,
change the present link to a non-flash option. There are probably more
people sending links to recipients where some will be using Apple devices than
people sending links to recipients where only non-Apple devices are involved.

Tony - I believe what Sebastian is saying is that there is simply not (does not exist) a non-flash version of the slideshow link. If you are using a slideshow link - it means it goes to a slideshow that is made with flash, thus it will not work on iOS devices. As to your suggestion to place all the options in one place- they are in one place and they are very logically positioned.

Sebastian - I believe what Tony is saying is that you did not fully comprehend his post.

I can suggest placing a "(this link will NOT work on Apple devices)" disclaimer in the share panel next to the slideshow link.

    Hi Tony,
It seems that you have skipped over the exact link that you want. On the Share Panel, go to the "Gallery" tab and grab the link for "Gallery Link". It's the first one there. It sounds like you're copying the Slideshow link and not the gallery link. The gallery link is the same one that can be retrieved from the address bar.

Or we can just replace the flash slideshow entirely with an HTML5 one :)

You are correct. I didn't notice the two choices.

I got burned using the lower link and started using the address bar link because
    most recipients use Apple devices.

I does seem a bil out-of-date to have a prominent link that works with less
than half of the devices the link will be sent to, but maybe it's not of interest
to SmugMug to deal with the present.

It's possible that I'm planning on updating all the slideshows to be (mostly) one and the same: an HTML5 slideshow with filmstrip (similar to the flash one) that can be opened fullscreen from the "Slideshow" button on a gallery, used as the Slideshow Content Block, linked to via a URL, or embedded (into a blog). At this point all I can say is that it's in the planning stages.

I'm also planning on not bringing the viewer controlled speed or filmstrip on/off controls into this, which the Flash version had. It's our opinion that the photographer should choose how they want their photos to be displayed, not the visitor.

    Good one Aaron :D
Some people might not like the speed of implementation for THEIR most desperate feature ... BUT ...
I congratulate you and Smugmug for your attitude of continually looking for improvements.

There is a steady stream of refinements and updated features that gives me the confidence that Smugmug will always remain responsive and relevant to a changing technological environment.

    Good on ya! clap.gif
My opinion does not necessarily make it true. What you do with my opinion is entirely up to you.
