Some keywords not working - seems to be a pattern

TLDR; For the longest time I assumed that my "/keyword" page just didn't work at all. Now I see that some of my keywords do work but most don't. Is there documentation about troubleshooting why some keywords won't work?

https://aschendel.smugmug.com/keyword
https://aschendel.smugmug.com/keyword/2014_ih_ans doesn't work
https://aschendel.smugmug.com/keyword/wdvc_2014_1747/ does work

Longer version:

I have maybe a hundred keywords like this in Lightroom (recently CC, but 5.x for a few years): 2016_WF_AR

Year(duh)_EventInitials_PersonInitials (don't tell what's his name, the sports photography patent troll!)

Generally I use them for smart galleries and, other than they switch to lowercase during the upload from LR, they seem to work fine for this (smart galleries). The keywords show in normal galleries as well.

A long time ago I noticed that when I click most of my tags, basically all of them in that format, the results page doesn't show any pictures or the "No Photos" page, just a keyword cloud. Again, I didn't really think much of it, just figured either I had screwed up my /keyword page or keywords didn't work.

Today I happened to click on one that worked fine and I found a few that do... None of them in my "main" format work though.

Any help or direction would be much appreciated. I think I would like to keep the basic organization of keywords (Year, Event, Person - in that order if possible), as it seems super-logical to me, but I guess if I have to revamp my approach I could.

Thanks much,

Andy

Just tried on my site and keywords with underscores don't work. Neither of the links you posted worked. But I wouldn't suggest combining multiple pieces of information into a single keyword anyway. Keywords should be repeatable. Each photo shouldn't have a unique keyword. That's what captions and titles are for. So use separate keywords for the year, the event, and the person. They will become much more useful.

Thanks Dave, I definitely will consider your suggestions which could make my keywords even more useful! To be clear, I definitely don't give each photo a unique keyword. I am using keywords to group all photos of a particular person for a given, one-time event, and using the year to keep them sorted logically in Lightroom. There is room for improvement for sure!

I did more reading today after you mentioned both links not working and found that apparently since I don't have my galleries "searchable" non-logged in visitors don't see anything. I can assure you though, when I am viewing my site as logged in, the keyword wf_2014_722 works and the keyword 2016_xcel_state_cr doesn't - and if I were using tags publicly that would be a serious bug (or I would have to revamp my approach - affecting hundreds of galleries and hundreds of smart galleries). Both styles upload ok via the plugin, can be added manually, are in the dropdown/work fine for smart galleries, and no limits are discussed in any of the official "use keywords" help/blog posts.

There seems to be a mixed bag of (relatively) unwritten rules around what smugmug tries to do with what we feed it, perhaps further complicated by what the Lightroom SmugMug plugin does as well.

Keywords can contain spaces, so just replace the underscores with spaces. Should work fine. But if you separate the year, event, and name into 3 keywords, you can still use them to create smart galleries for that set of photos, but you could also create smart galleries in the future for additional sets... Like every year of that event, all photos of that person, all photos from that year of that person, etc. It'll just give you more flexibility in the future with no downside that I can think of.

I use "_" in hundreds of keywords. They do work. http://www.photosbyat.com/keyword

    One example:
    http://www.photosbyat.com/keyword/bird_videos

Even created a smart gallery using this keyword containing an underline.

Hmm, interesting. I tried underscores and periods in a couple and couldn't get either to work, even though I was sure they did before. Must have just been an indexing issue.
