The flashy hoverfly

Hoverfly Xanthogramma pedissequum. The larvae of this hoverfly are found in black ant nests. I found this out the hard way when twice I spotted newly emerged adults on grass stems- sat down to photograph them and got bitten on the bum by ants.

Nice work, especially the in-flight ones.
At times, we all suffer in the cause!

Thanks Harold
It was that that made me look up whether they were associated with ants.
