As I'm paying for my site I would not expect adverts to be popping up when I click on a gallery. When I click on a gallery I sometimes get things popping up saying "What's new at SmugMug" which I have to click to get rid of. Why is this when I'm paying for my site? I would expect it perhaps on a free site.

Sometimes we have some great news we are excited about and want to share that with you and all customers. We don't intend for it to come across like an advertisement, just a way to share recent news. :)

They are only shown to you as the site owner when you are logged in. Your site visitors will never see them. Once you click the X, it's gone until we have another bit of news to share.

Can I suggest that e-mail or popup are separately adequate, and both for the exact same subject are overkill?

They are fairly few and far between (well, a bit less so lately), and not really intrusive, but getting the same thing twice at about the same time...

That's fair enough that you want to share news but I think that it should be displayed on a News section on your website or on your Facebook/Twitter pages. I really don't want it popping up in the style of an advert and despite you saying that's not the way it's intended to come across, that's exactly how it does come across unfortunately.
