These caterpillars Pieris brassicae are a familar sight to gardeners who grow Brassicas. The last time I though we had these, they turned out to be something much more exciting. So when these turned up on Nasturtium leaves I decided to take some shots. What looked like the colourfully patterned compound eyes of adults caught my attention, not least because the larvae have much simpler eyes. It turned out to be the head capsule.

I took some initial shots with my usual Kiron 105.Then I went in close with my reversed Schneider HM 40 setup, the x1.5 TC making the f16 selected, effectively f22 with a FOV of 6mm.

I found the crosseye stereogram a bit strange at first but I now find it OK. I don't think the frames were shot with this in mind but there was enough variation in angle of view for me to match up a pair of images.

The low magnification image of the larva is last. The images are mostly uncropped.

EM-1, twin flash, hand-held.
