Yesterday was a frustrating day but eventually successful.

I walked down the garden to see if any insects were around. At the Goldenrod, which is in full flower, I saw an unmistakable Volucella.

I fetched my macro kit and arrived back at the Goldenrod. Where was the fly? There it was, level with my chest and with no room to raise my camera. The fly assessed the situation before I did and departed. There were to be numerous encounters during the day. The problem was that very strong gusts of wind persisted throughout the day, thrashing the stems of the Goldenrod around. I got lots of shots but few keepers. Late in the afternoon, the wind stopped. Delighted, I took a few more shots. Within minutes, heavy rain set in for the rest of the day.

From examination of the image, there was at least one male and one female.
