I was going to photograph something else entirely when I saw the yellow of the closed hind wings of this butterfly on the yellow Canna flower, opening for the first time in my collection. It was early evening and the light, on a dull, overcast day, was fading. So it was a race against time.

The intention was to shoot some in daylight, aperture priority, and some with my normal full flash. I used various apertures: f8, f11 & f16 but cannot identify which (manual lens). Only one of the daylight ones was sharp enough.

There will be split opinions, not only for flash vs daylight but also whether yellow(ish) on yellow works.

Olympus EM-1, Kiron 105mm, hand-held.

The daylight shot is shown first 1/100 sec at ISO 800. The flash were 1/250 at ISO 400. I have not digitally moderated shadows as I would normally do, to make comparisons more realistic.
