Mini Challenge 237 - The Passange of Time

THE PASSAGE OF TIME

I have had a lot of fun going back to places I have visited and seeing how they have changed. So that is going to be the theme for this mini-challenge. Instead of three pictures, what I would like to see is a pair of photos for each entry (so six photos altogether) which shows how some thing or some place or some person has changed over time. Or you can show that it did NOT change over time. It can even be something that is changing within a short amount of time (like the tide going out). You can do a collage as I usually do, or just put the two photos together so that they can be compared.

This mini will run until November 30, 2016.

OUR UN-OFFICIAL GENERAL RULES

1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!
2. The host supplies a topic and you post 1-3 entries The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter.
The 1st place winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner and then passes on the baton to the new champion.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some critique or criticism, just ask within your post.
5. The winner has up to three days (72 hours) to begin a new mini-challenge, or the honor goes to the #2 finisher and so forth.
Guidelines:
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).
3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)
4. Give each image you enter a title.
5. Enjoy discussion with members about their images, don't let this just be an entry thread!
6. When quoting a post change the IMG urls to a 200x200 size picture so it is clear your post is feedback and not another entry. (see here for help)
7. Don't be hesitant, share'em and enter!
Mini-Challenge pointers:
1. Upon winning a mini-challenge round your first step is coming up with a new theme, and start a new thread using the same format as others have used.
2. Make sure to notify the admin of this thread to update the main thread links with your entry thread.
3. Feel free to watch the thread as it grows or wait to the end time and look at all the entries all at once.
4. After the time/date has passed, then officially close the thread with a single post notifying everyone of the fact.
5. After you're finished judging start a new thread (again use the prior formats) and post your Winner and runners-up, it is important to have runners up incase the winner does not show within the 72hr window.
6. PM the winner with this info above and let them know they have 72hrs.
7. After the 72hrs and the winner does not show up, notify the next runner-up and post a message on the Winner thread of the fact.
8. Remember, if you're the Winner, you run the show.

Some examples - my oldest daughter - age 3 and age 55

Morning Glory Pool - Yellowstone - on the left is my dad's photo from 1948 and on the right is my grandson's photo from 2010 (so I couldn't enter this in a mini as I didn't take either of the photos, but it is an interesting example)

Key West Lighthouse - on the left as it was in 1966 (when it was painted yellow) and on the right in 2005. I remembered it as yellow so I thought maybe it was a different lighthouse when I saw it was white.

And this one I just did - it is Gloucester Courthouse Square (Virginia). On the right is a photo I took in Feb 1962 and on the left in Oct 2016

Don't think it has to be a long period of time, although that's what I specialize in. It can be spring and fall (or as in this last set - winter and late summer. It is important to note that most of these comparison photos were not taken with the idea that they could be compared to some previous photo. Most of the time I find out after the fact that I have a similar view to a photo that was already taken. In the case of the Gloucester County photo above (and the winning photo from the previous mini), I printed out the previous photo and tried to duplicate it with the camera and cropping. But with my dad's photo of London, I did not think of comparing the photos until long after the second photo was taken.

That is also true of my dad's photo in Leningrad of Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in 1970

R210-00830005.JPG

and my photo (taken from the bus) in 2009 when I visited what was now St. Petersburg with my granddaughter it was an Anti-Religion Museum. I didn't figure out that it was the same place until several years after the trip when I was editing my dad's photos.

100_4231.JPG

And this shows how you can compare two photos without making a collage of them

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Not really something that's generally of interest to me, but I have one photo, taken over half a century ago, that would certainly qualify for this - if I could get an up to date version.

Since the original was taken from the upstairs back bedroom of a house that's now owned by people unknown to me, gaining access to get the update could - in this day and age - prove an 'interesting' challenge :)

It doesn't have to be a LONG period of time. You can do something as simple as a tree with and without leaves. Or the shore with the tide in and the tide out. And it doesn't have to be the exact same angle (the one of London is not exactly the same as one is higher up than the other).

Haven't you ever gone back to a site and rephotographed it?

This is a very interesting idea and I admire your comparing photo collages.

I have also seen paintings showing the same place during different seasons and I thought to do the same with photography, but haven't really taken this task seriously :)

However I thing I have some that may apply... digging, digging :)

I thought that if I set the end of the mini after Thanksgiving you could recreate a portrait of a family member, or a family group.

Somebody may... but personally I don't have such photos. * Especially considering that the images posted have to be taken by us.

I found some images taken in different seasons and I also have some showing daytime vs. nighttime - if this apply to the challenge.

Since I am the photographer most of the time, most of the pictures of family members were taken by me. I thought that would also be the case for others. But I also use historic images taken by my parents. When I add my image to theirs, I consider that makes it a new work which is mine.

Tatiana, you know I am a sucker for lighthouses. I like the Ottawa ones too. I have never been to Vegas so I was quite confused as it looked like Venice, but - not.

When I found the Peggy's cove light house in my archives, I did remember that you actually liked lighthouses. Glad to please you with these posts :)

... and oh, about the Venetian hotel/casino and the whole complex, I was totally shocked when I first saw it. I knew about this before, but never seen it until 2013 - I consider myself very lucky.

It's really nice and the replica very well done, although you can say it's Las Vegas :)

The water is also very low (like a pool) considering the fact that it's actually in the middle of the Nevada desert :)

I thought those statues were strange when I visited Venice, so I did some research

One column is topped by the winged lion of San Marco AKA a griffin which is supposed to have a book between his paws

The other one looks like a man in a Roman toga with a big spear and a halo standing on an alligator or a crocodile. I understand that this represents St. Theodore, who was Venice's first patron saint, and the crocodile is supposed to be a dragon.

But since the columns and statues were really raided from Oriental sites, they are kind of reverse anachronisms. That is, some Venetian brought back a column with a griffin on it, and they put it up and called it the Lion of San Marco. Another Venetian brought back an Egyptian column with a man who has killed a crocodile on top, and so they stuck a Roman emperor's head on it, added a halo and called it St. Theodore and the Dragon.

    4466805-Molo-Venice.jpg

Of course if I had really thought about it I would have known that there isn't a bridge there in Venice. But I was succered in by the tower and the columns

All the time / very often ... but I suspect my intent is somewhat different from yours :)

I generally use (and select) the site / scene / bkground etc as a textured canvas to (hopefully) complement whatever's happening with the main subject. As such, the fewer details in the bg that pull the viewer's eye away from the subject, the better.

These (same) backdrops do, of course, change with the seasons / weather / time of day etc ... but I don't go out with the intention of specific documenting these changes / differences.

Great challenge GrandmaR, I had to search a lot to find some and that was the fun part, going through tons of old images :)

    I took 3 "time scales"

First: Meatloaf, before the bake, after the bake a few hours later

    PEG_Nex_01540_20120506-XL.jpg

Second: Where our son's apartment was going to be built and the final result, timespan of a couple of years

    PEG_Nex_00269_20110914-XL.jpg
    PEG_A850_2_5849_20140302-XL.jpg

Third: My aunt and uncle's home in the Dordogne, 13 years apart. The first shortly after they moved in in 2002, the second after my uncle passed away in 2015 (my aunt already passed away in 2011)

Great idea for a challenge! I am sharing two photos now and will come back with a few more later.

1a. Maroon Bells in the Twilight Before Dawn
    i-WjZBS3X-XL.jpg

1b. Maroon Bells in the Early Morning Light
    i-4XjhPLN-XL.jpg

These photos were taken on the same morning in Colorado. A professional photographer had warned us to get to Maroon Bells very early to be able to get a good vantage point for photos. We did. It was dark and cold, even in early August. I wasn't prepared to take night sky photos or record the owls hooting, but I did savor the transition from night to day.

Found a few more to share.

    2. Day of Birth and Third Birthday

3a. Cairnwood Estate in the Winter

and then in 2015 - the lower area is the same formation.

The time difference doesn't have to be 50 years - before and after sunrise on the same day is fine.

The Soviet Red Army Hats - Now and Then
I suspect sovient red army hat conjures up different memories but many would probably associate red army hats with the military parade at the Moscow square in the soviet era. A red star was one of the emblems representing the Soviet Union under the rule of the Communist Party, along with the hammer and sickle. Today, hats of the once feared red army are sold to tourists in the red square. If you look carefully, the hats are clipped onto some sticks. This photo was taken near the Kremlin Palance in Moscow.
