The metamorphosis of the Downy Emerald

The metamorphosis of the Downy Emerald takes about 4-5 hours. The different stages is shown in the photos below.

  1. The caterpillar climbs out of the water.

  2. The breaktrough starts from the back of the "neck".

  3. The head of the new dragonfly breaks through.

  4. More breakthrough.

  5. A new dragonfly is born.

  6. Now the skeleton has to harden and the blood has to fill the wings.

  7. The new dragonfly can fly.

  8. A close-up of a new dragonfly.
