I'm way behind on sending product updates (I'll give a big post soon with everything we've been hard at work on) but I'm pleased to announce that our customers who use a Windows computer can now Upload to SmugMug via our new SmugMug Windows app. You may download the app here: https://www.smugmug.com/features/photo-apps

Who needs browsers? Upload your photos and create galleries and folders from the comfort of your desktop. Simply log in, choose some photos, and start uploading. Easy as pie.

That's pretty sweet! Any plans for something like that for Mac?

What advantage does this have over the SmugMug LR plugin, if any?

We want to make it as easy as possible to upload from where-ever your photos are. Here at SmugMug we're all Mac people so we'd love to have a solution for Mac OS as well, but it's not available at this time.

If you're using LR to edit and publish your photos, then your best bet would be to stick with the Lightroom Plugin. The SmugMug Windows app is geared towards our customers who are not using LR to publish their photos.

Any chance this uploader could be bi-directional, including caption & keyword metadata on the downloads (comparable to the Lightroom plug-in sync enhancement which is in beta)? That would be fab for us Lightroom avoiders!

I can take it as a feature request for the bi-directional (be able to download photos too) bit but we're always leery of changing the files that you sent to us. I know there are some of you that edit titles/captions in SmugMug and would like to have them embedded in the file, but there's also a large group of people who want the exact same file they uploaded to us, to be returned to them. Sure, there could be a setting and maybe that's a possible solution, but I'm always cautious about settings that can dangerously overwrite data someone might want.

The developers are undoubtedly finding creative solutions on that issue for the LR plug-in as we speak. I'm curious about the use cases for that large group of people who want the exact same file back. Do you know why they would add/update captions/keywords in SM but not want those values back in a download?

I believe metadata-embedded image download is already logged as a feature request. I was just seeing this new app as a promising opportunity to get it done. Thanks for giving it consideration!

I fall into that part of this group: In Lightroom I write captions that can be used wherever my photos go ... but when I upload them to SmugMug I will often change the captions since I know it's on a webpage. I'll add HTML for links or do additional formatting that I wouldn't want embedded back into the file. I add a sub-title using HTML/CSS, etc.

That makes sense; thanks for helping me understand. So in the LR plug-in, I presume you would take advantage of an up-only-sync setting for caption.
