Stats?

Will SmugMug ever fix the stats reporting?

I can watch Google Analytics, people viewing the site, browsing web pages, etc. And of course SmugMug shows 0 views. Same thing with Stat Counter... 768 views through Stat Counter, SmugMug 0. This has been a pretty common occurrence for years however I keep asking every year and it never gets fixed.

You happen to catch us while we had an issue with stats reporting. The issue has been identified and fixed and we are re-processing the data from the last few days. You should see them populated soon. You can check status.smugmug.com for more info

And here we are, 3 days later and they are still not working even though the "bug" has been identified.

All the previous days stats are being reprocessed. They should appear soon

It's a pain, I know, but Smugmug sorts this type of thing out.

Stats processing fell almost a week behind and it's taking a little while to catch up. I checked with the engineers and we believe it will take another 2-3 days before it's all back to normal. We have all the data, we just need to sort through it. Thanks for all of your patience!

As of now we believe we're caught up through April 20th and are populating stats from April 21 through April 23rd.

Please, I'm very old - I may not live long enough for this to happen. My main gripe is we were not informed, but left in the dark!

I’m having the opposite problem. Really high counts (to me) on SM and zip on StatCounter. Does 19,000 vs 500 in three months sound weird? I wrote to tech support and they answered “I am really not sure how the STATCOUNTER counts visitors and views of your images - you would need to check this with statcounter. Stats cannot be downloaded on SmugMug unfortunately and there is no possibility to exclude your IP address.”

StatCounter says: “If a visitors web browser can not connect to your StatCounter for any
reason their hit can not be logged. The only thing in our control is if your tracking project can be confirmed
to be working, which it has been.”

What’s the point of promoting StatCounter if it can’t get correct info? I just compared a year’s worth. 93,000 vs 2,300. I know you count multi views and landing pages but still. I always used StatCounter because they have so much visitor info and you have none. But I though no one was viewing. I can’t understand such high numbers here - which are fairly useless without visitor info. I’ve read the StatCounter posts and it seems there have been several problem periods. All since New SmugMug.

It's possible that statcounter is showing page views while smugmug stats is showing image views. A gallery set to Collage landscape, for example, may only count as 1 page view but loads many images.

    Stats processing should be restored.

Yes, Statcounter only shows page views, not images. It won't tell you anything about lightbox views or count the images in a collage display. It will exclude your own views only if you have set a browser cookie using the Statcounter tools, which you must do for each browser you use. In SmugMug stats, your own views are not counted as long as you are logged on, but will count if not. I've noticed some minor flakiness in views being counted when I do maintenance. I'm not sure whether these are coming from the Organizer or when changing featured images, but I'm sure they would not add up to much over a year. I'm also fairly sure that except for a brief time when SmugMug was counting owner views, the behavior was the same in old SmugMug as in the new one.

    Statcounter
I see EVERY photo a visitor clicks. Just checked latest visitor, 164 photo views, none for lightbox,
My galleries are set to Smugmug style. This visitor clicked thumbs on left in this case to see large photos.

    Morning,

A small correction about Stats and what is said above. "In SmugMug stats, your own views are not counted as long as you are logged on"

As far as I see, this is not correct. When the owner views an image in the SmugMug mobile app that is counted. I raised this some year ago and the answer was that it is a known bug.

We don't collect any stats from the mobile apps - so owner views are not counted there as well. We'd love to get stats into the apps but don't have any plans at this time

    Hello Leftquark,

I did a simple test using a folder which is set to Private. Using the Android app I viewed a few photos and they are now all listed as viewed in my Stats.
This means that either my views are counted (as I said they would be) or private does not work (which I believe it does). Do try it yourself and see what you get.

I have had communication with SmugMug people on and off for some years (including yourself) regarding this. Last message was November last year:

My Comment to the SmugMug heros
"Since you changed statistics some time ago (maybe a year or so) you state "We track only your visitors' views". This is not correct. You also count my own views when I do them on my own photos on my Android using your app. When LeftQuark announced some Stat changes in his "SmugMug Product News" I pointed this out and he had it fixed. But whatever he did stopped working after a while. So now again also my Android views are counted in my stats"

    Replies from Heros
"It’s not a bug, it’s something that happened during a backend change that was out of our control. We only track visitor views, other than your views on your Android application. I am reaching out to our product and Qa teams to see if this is a bug, and if it’s not, if it’s something we are, or can change."

"I found the bug, we actually have it set as an issue on our end. We (our technical teams) are aware of the problem, but I cannot say when it will be fixed."

    Regards, Harald

I usually pride myself on knowing exactly what we've done here at SmugMug but this will be one of those times when I have to put my foot in my mouth. A little over a year ago we made the decision to exclude all stats counts so that we could exclude owner views on mobile. Unfortunately that wasn't working, as you pointed out, it was unreliable. While we might be able to more reliably block stats from our own apps, it wouldn't have blocked views from other 3rd party applications: say if you were viewing your photos on a Roku.

Recently we've made the decision to count all stats on mobile, including owner views. Our help page reflects this: "Owner views are currently counted when accessing SmugMug via a mobile application."

I'll be closing the bug report (it won't be fixed) and we'll do our best to educate everyone that owner views are counted from the mobile / third party apps.

    Morning,

Thank you for the clear message, not what I had hoped for, but one can't win them all.
I will survive and continue to mentally try to reduce Stats when I am aware of me looking at images on my mobile.
And I am glad to see you already have changed that annoying message above Stats, that was good

Is there a way to get stat locations and demographics, to tell what brings the clicks in? Just wondering who/what/when and how.

You can add Statcounter and/or Google Analytics to your site. Those will provide much of the info you want.
