Get rid of Flash

Every week or so a new vulnerability is discovered. Then Adobe releases a fix which as often as not, crashes or hangs Firefox. Then FF disables Flash. Rinse and repeat.

I've disabled it for now, and while SM stats are complaining, they're still usable without the graphics.

I'd encourage SM to join the growing movement to put a stake through its evil heart once and for all.

I just discovered a more troubling issue with Flash on SmugMug. I unveiled my new site today and found that the buttons on the Get a Link panel did not work in FF 41 (Win7). Smug Hero Jennifer helped me identify the problem, namely, that I disabled Flash. Enabling it caused the buttons to work properly. Unlike the stats panel--which complains when it can't find Flash--Get a Link doesn't give a warning. It just fails.

Personally, I can decide whether it's worth the pain to run Flash again or to just do without the copy buttons and copy the URLs manually--they are visible and correct in the text boxes. I've been running for a month without Flash and haven't missed it, especially the weekly updates and attempts to sneak Norton bloatware into the installation. Till now. What concerns me more is that any visitors to my site who have disabled Flash in FF will see the copy buttons fail and won't have a clue why. They'll blame me--or SmugMug if they're more sophisticated.

Google and Apple seem to be doing just fine without Flash. Why can't SmugMug?

We're slowly phasing out Flash, and we're pretty much gone with those few exceptions (some slideshows, the stats, and the Get-a-Link copy buttons). We're working on replacing the slideshows with all HTML5 versions and we'll be rolling out an entirely new "Share Photo" panel which doesn't use flash (in fact, there's no way to do the "Copy to Clipboard" anymore without flash, so users will have to press Command+C to copy).

Good news, thanks. I think I'll probably disable Flash again and just copy links manually. Die, Flash, Die!

Putting that stake through the heart of the flash video player will a good thing too. I hope that's on the list.

In the discussion of getting rid of Flash, I've posted some screenshots of our new Share / Get-a-Link Tool, which removes flash. See the post here: http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=255286

I would also like to see a non-flash version of the statistics ... it's kind of funny, I've got two computers, one iPad, one iPhone and the statistics isn't fully usable on any of them, so I have to go to work and use my computer there :D

(and no, I'm not going to install Chrome just to view the stats on smugmug)

From another forum's recent discussion of Flash:

"Adobe is made out of half baked mud bricks, which may also describe their software architecture."

I noticed today that the stats graph is now working without Flash.

    :+1:

Yep - as of this morning we've replaced Stats with a non-flash graph!
