Crop Tool Barely Works in Chrome with Windows 10 - Desktop

The Crop Tool is almost un-usable in Chrome with Windows 10. It's very very glitchy-- mainly I can't grab the edges or corners to pull in, & it doesn't matter which size or format I've got it set to. I think I've only tried it in the single photo crop mode, not the bulk crop tool. But I've tried & tried over the past week or more & it only rarely works, & never on the 1st try. Sometimes I can click on a different size or format & the edge will suddenly, randomly grab (using a mouse with desktop) but mostly it's just a frustrating series of attempts that fail. It doesn't matter if the gallery is SmugMug style or Collage style. I'm getting to the crop tool by way of the Tools icon below each photo preview. Sure hope this can be fixed very soon; I have a lot of cropping to do. I've seen no action on the bug I posted back in July.

This sounds like a digitizer issue. Are you using a touch-screen to make selections?

No, as I said in my original post, I'm using a mouse. I was also trying to use various tools on my Samsung tablet a few times recently too, especially since crop wasnt working on that desktop (my usual computer died a couple weeks ago) Well, that went terribly. The formatting, and behavior of nearly every tool on the tablet (Samsung 10.1 A ) is truly appalling. Photographer tools are very skimpy on the app, & don't work great. The overall appearance is pretty bad too. But if you call up the desktop version, the tools are just not usable. So many things overlap which shouldn't, action is very glitchy & klunky, etc. It's a shame; I mean it llooks like it could look really great & should work well, but it just seems these tools & formatting havent been tested much on tablets. I wish SmugMug would work lots better on tablets, since th photos themselves are so much better viewed on a tablet than a phone.

Is anyone paying attention to bugs right now? I'd like to hear back on this, that it's getting attention. I've tried cropping again in other galleries, on Chrome with Windows 10, & the tool simply doesn't work. Every now & then it'll suddenly work if set on "Unconstrained", but it's very unreliable & won't work on any of the set sizes or "Original". I'm only using Chrome right now because I'm stuck with it on a "stopgap" PC since mine died a few wks ago. I'd use FF instead, but FF keeps giving me an error due to something about the security certificate. (again, FF on Windows 10) every time I try to go to my SmugMug site. Very frustrating. I haven't been able to force an exception. Just can't get to my site on FF. Note: I'm using a mouse with a PC-- this is not a touchscreen.

I am not able to duplicate the problem you are having on my equipment; i.e. the SmugMug browser based cropping tool is working as I expect it to work on my machines. I suggest that you check with a computer support person in your area to see if they can find any issues on your computer.

That said, my normal workflow is to do all image editing on my computer before posting to SmugMug, and that includes cropping operations.

This is definitely not a problem with my computer or mouse. If so, it would be present on more than one browser. SmugMug needs to try replicating this with Chrome on Windows 10. (At least, from what I understand, that's how fixing bugs works, right?) Yes, I understand lots of people do all their editing on desktop prior to uploading. The reason we have tools on SmugMug though is for all the times we're unable to do that, & a host of other reasons (easier than re-uploading, if you've already got a photo captioned, keyworded, & collected into a couple galleries, for one) So, is someone at SmugMug going to look into this?? Thank you.

See, you are having problems with FireFox, just not the same problems you are having with Chrome.

Please do have someone look at your computer. Strange things are going on with your system.

    Hi Anna Lisa,
I just tried the crop tool on Windows 10 in Chrome and see no issues with adjusting the crop frame. I can drag on all 4 corners or even the sides without any problem. When moving the mouse over a corner or border, my mouse cursor changes into the two arrow resize cursor and I can click+hold and move the mouse cursor to adjust the crop.
I checked this for different photos and it's working fine.

When saving a crop, it's normal that the new crop isn't directly displayed on in the editor / gallery as the browser still has the old version of the photo in its cache. However, if you refresh the page or open the photo in the gallery again you should see the updated photo.

If you still have an issue, can you check that your Chrome is up to date via the Chrome menu button > help > about Google Chrome item? Checking on my Chrome, it displays version 61.0.3163.100 as the latest.
Also, do you have any extensions installed in your Chrome? You can check on that via the Chrome menu > more tools > extensions item. Which extensions do you see there?

Could you also record a screencast of the issue? You can use the free screencast service to do so. If you prefer not to post a link to your screencast here, you may of course email us with details at our HelpDesk.

When I said I'm using Chrome right now cuz I'm stuck with it on a "stopgap" PC, I didn't really explain correctly. So yes, some of the time (like now) I'm on an old laptop, & sometimes using Chrome on that. But this one is running Windows 7. And the crop tool has no problem on this, & FireFox is able to access my site fine as well. I'm simply using this old one as little as possible because it has no digital display card, so my big desktop screen (attached to it) which used to look & work great for editing tasks, flickers badly & discolors & is very hard on the eyes when attached to this particular old "stopgap" lapto!.
SO, whenever possible, especially if editing, I was using instead my spouse's work computer, which is a new, great, fast laptop attached to a fabulous 3-screen desktop display. It has Chrome, FF, & Explorer with Windows 10. (All are updated right away) In Chrome, all is fast & easy except for the Crop tool. Simply can't "grab" the edges of the frame to move them. The FireFox problem would appear to be on SmugMug's end; I mean when you get that message saying their security certificate isn't up-to-date (or is expired) or something (& therefore FF on that computer won't even go to my site), I thought that was always on the part of the website itself... Idk, I'm not having that issue with FF on this other old laptop on Windows 7. And none of the other browsers are unable to go to my site, on either computer. Just FF on Windows 10 on the "good" computer. I confess I know nothing about https or security certificates. I've only had that trouble a couple times in the past when some computer's clock was out-of-whack. Is there some other typical cause of the "expired security certificate" message?

Hi, Sebastian-- Thanks for looking into this. I'll double-check that Chrome is up-to-date, but as I just said to Ziggy, this is my spouse's work computer & I know it's updated very regularly. I don't know what extensions it has, so I'll have him check. I'm pretty sure there will be a few, as he uses this for video editing & other visual tasks. I'll get back to you on that. The issue definitely isn't with the actual "save" mechanism, as yes, I'm aware of the old cached versions appearing here & there for awhile. The issue is only with trying to "grab" the sides or corners in the 1st place. Were you successful in grabbing the sides and corners in several of the Crop Tool settings (unconstrained, 4x6, 8x10, Custom, etc.?) Also, are you aware of anything that could cause FF on Windows 10 to give us the error message about SmugMug's security certificate being expired? I believe my spouse checked for a couple of the typical causes, & I also tried to do the "Allow an exception" or "Advanced" option, which didn't solve the problem. I simply wasn't able to go on my site in FF.

Sebastian, I did write an earlier response about the Crop Tool problem & also included my FireFox problem. At this point, please disregard the FF problem & just focus on the other Crop Tool problem, because we've gotten the FF problem resolved. That FF problem was unrelated to SmugMug. The company who owns the computer has fixed that issue.

    Anna Lisa,
I'm glad to hear that at least the FF problem was resolved. For your Chrome issue, we'll be standing by for additional details, like the version of Chrome, extensions installed and a screencast so we can see what you see.
