Why am I getting logged off? Is anyone else? Lightroom Plugin?

FergusonFerguson Registered Users Posts: 1,339 Major grins

For ages we have been told that you can stay logged in for 30 days for average stuff (e.g. organizer) and 1 day for more sensitive stuff (e.g. account). I believe you.

But I also know that I get logged off far more frequently than that, often multiple times in one day.

So the question is what is doing it. I have a theory, and am posting this to see if others notice such an association, or perhaps some other pattern.

I find that MOST of the time when I discover being logged off I have just done a "Show on Smugmug" from the Lightroom Smugmug plugin.

Caveats: I very often navigate using that command, so most of the time when Smugmug opens for me, it is through that mechanism. So if the logoff were completely random the above statement is also true, I get it. But it "feels" like it is more frequently still. Also, it is absolutely not everytime I do a "Show on Smugmug", not even a decent percentage of the time. It is not reproducible.

But when I'm active with a bunch of events, it is at least once a day I have to log in to do things like get the download image size selection (that's the most frequent use) or organizer (occasionally). I rarely go to the account portion so whether that's once a day or not I do not know or really care.

But... this may be coincidence. What is definitely not coincidence is a need to log in fresh about once a day.

Anyone else have the issue? Are there any patterns to what you see? Is it by change the LR Plugin?

    Hello Linwood,
It may be a question of third party cookies. It sounds like your browser is having a difficult time. It sounds like you're losing your logged in cookie.

Please first check to make sure that you're accepting all cookies in your browser. Next, please clear any SmugMug or (custom domain) log ins in your browser, restart your browser, and give it another go.

This particular error can occur if 1) you use a custom domain for your SmugMug site and 2) you have your browser set to block all third-party cookies. Since you do use a custom domain for your SmugMug site, you’ll just want to check your browser cookie settings and ensure that you are accepting third party cookies, at least from SmugMug.

In Chrome, you can go to Chrome’s Settings > Advanced > Content Settings > Cookies. You have two options here:

    1) Set ‘block third party cookies and data’ to be disabled. This then allows all third-party cookies. Or,
    2) If you prefer to leave that option enabled, in the Allow section below, click the Add button. Add an exception for [*.]smugmug.com (just like that, including the brackets, asterisk, etc). This will exclude all third party cookies, except those passed on the smugmug.com domain.

Once you make that change, you should be able to upload and use the Organizer tool without problems.

I hope this helps, but please let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help. Thank you, and have a great day!

Thanks, @Jenuine, third party cookies are enabled, and this is a long running but sporadic thing; if it was just a setting I think it would be more repeatable. I think (hope) someone else will chime in with their experiences, I know I'm not the only one.

    I don't follow this. I login like this: https://secure.smugmug.com/login?goTo=https://www.captivephotons.com/

    Is that not correct?

    Hello @Ferguson
When logging into the site if the browser has logged you out or if a fresh log on, It is always best to go to www.smugmug.com, use the log in option from there, http://take.ms/9GAbO, with sitename or email and password. Rather than going to the custom domain url and logging in from there. This can help alleviate some log in issues.

@Jenuine, but... but...the link I used is exactly the link that the menu item from Smugmug takes you to, how can that be incorrect? If that's incorrect, then your internal menu login/logout would appear to be wrong.

It's not that I do not believe you, but if your login/logout links are broken, why not fix them?

This is not something I invented, it's built into Smugmug?!?

I've been putting up with this for years now. I use Safari on OSX and without fail my login lasts about an hour tops before I'll have to go over to Smugmug.com and login again.

If I weren't so used to it by now I'd be tearing my hair out over it.

You probably can't tell from the small avatar, but I have little left. Glad to hear someone else suffers from it, I expect eventually more will show up as I have heard it quite a lot.
