Opening Lightboox occasionally slow - something is broken

FergusonFerguson Registered Users Posts: 1,339 Major grins

I use the Collage Landscape format, and when I click on an image (that's called Lightboox?) it seems to take an inordinately long time.

Something changed.

Other navigation is normal. Once you get one open, it is normal to move from one to the next. Opening the first is VERY slow. Talking 20-25 seconds vs less than a second normally (I'm on 150mbs service).

Something is broken.

It seems specifically to be the first time I open an image in Lightboox in a gallery. once I open one in a gallery the rest in that gallery are reasonably fast.

I checked with the Support Heroes and we aren't seeing other reports of this on the help desk. I also looked at a few of your galleries and the Lightbox opens nearly instantaneously. I checked on my phone as well, connected to LTE service (disabled WiFi so I could get 2 different internet connections).

Do you have a few example galleries (including images to open in LB) where this is happening? Could you let us know where geographically you're located and who your internet provider is so I can provide some details to the ops team?

You're on an account that is still using the old Lightbox, which we haven't made any changes to recently. But we'll investigate.

    Yes and no.

I was about to write that it was every gallery the first time, but it is not.

Before I posted this I must have tried half a dozen without one working correctly. Since you write it, two worked right, and one was really slow.

    https://www.captivephotons.com/Events/Rodeo/Barrels053016/

But... it was only slow for the first ime.

Try something I haven't touched perhaps, like Aviation or Travel. See if it will fail for you. I went through the first 6 galleries under Nature before I got one to fail. I had debug on and have no idea what I'm seeing -- evrtyhing shows loading in about 120ms, but ... it wasn't. And the last two items are still "pending" to "intercom.io", is that normal? The page things it is finished.

So I did a reload -- about 12 seconds (way too long). Still got those two "pending" but no real indication that is the slowdown. And nothing obvious that was the cause.

    I went to the next

    https://www.captivephotons.com/Nature/Eagles-Cape-Coral-George-II/

Just getting the gallery up was surprisingly slow (6 seconds), and two of the small images each took 3-4 seconds to load, whereas others of the same or orager size were generally 100-400ms.

    Went to the next gallery

    https://www.captivephotons.com/Nature/Harns-Marsh

THis was even more weird, most of it came up quickly, so I opened the first image in the gallery. It's 1.4MB in size, and it took 44.55 seconds to open (per the network timeline in Chrome). That's ridiculous.

I hit refresh and the same image took 240ms to open.

Maybe your CDN is sick for SW Florida?

Something about the new rendering algorithm?

Payback for all the complaints? :)

Just as a test, I went to speakeasy.net/speedtest and chose San Jose, CA (despite being in Florida) and I got a ping time of 75ms, jitter of 2ms, down of 211Mbps, and upload of 22mbps. I ran it multiple times for similar results, so I do not think it is my connection (plus I live on this connection doing consulting work around the country).

Sorry... I can see there's something wrong, but it is not repeatable enough.

PS. Speaking of which, I'll try this from a site in Chicago where I'm working... hang on...

OK, I was VPN'd to a site near Chicago, and opened about 15 galleries and an image in each, with no slowdown.

    I think it's a CDN issue.

I'm investigating further. The first gallery you linked to seemed to take longer than I would have expected on my internet here, so I'm passing this to the QA team to dig into further.

The fact that the first image took 20/30 seconds to be displayed in lightbox...it seemed normal! It's always been like that for me.
    I've also Collage Landscape.

Now in fact, since this weekend, I notice my site is slower than usual in loading pages and the lightbox takes about 90/120 seconds to open.

That said, there is no doubt that internet speed in Italy is horrendous (if a 20mb adsl arrives to 15mb you're lucky) and Fiber is still very rare to find. Mobile 4G covers only the most urbanized areas. Anyway, when I had the opportunity, I tested the site also on fiber connections and the opening time of the lightbox is always long (a few seconds less than my adsl).

I tried a dozen or so examples this morning, new galleries I had not opened recently, and all were fast. Whatever was causing it for me appears gone (though of course I may just not have hit it yet). But appears gone.

I am still puzzled by some of the errors I ran across in testing this with debug.

Should these be of concern? Note also the continuous grey lines that represent intercom.io -- that's something Smugmug is adding Intercom.io to my pages. Not sure what that is all about; it advertises itself as "a new and better way to acquire, engage and retain customers:" and "uses bots and live chat". Bots? On my web pages? Should I be concerned?
