Holly Speckle Trochila ilicina on Dead Holly Leaves

We have a mature Holly tree in our garden and there are dead leaves beneath it, accumulated over many years. I was searching for possible fungi or slime moulds when I noticed that many leaves had these black speckles over most or all of their upper surface. There was no significant signs of the infection on the undersides.

I have since learned that this is a summer infection specific to dead Holly leaves. It is an Asomycete fungus. The holly leaves are still very shiny when long dead. That the fruiting bodies of the fungus are also shiny suggests that they are subcutaneous (below the surface).

The higher magnifications were shot with the Laowa 25mm x2.5 to x5. I exposed by sunlight.
