I had been photographing a Nomada bee looking for host nest under some short grass when I was distracted by this one. I didn't get any really good images as it was burrowing down through the grass immediately, just after each landing.

Having been out in the garden for thousands of hours, photographing in the garden during the past two decades, I have never seen this species at ground level before.

Olympus EM-1 (aperture priority), Olympus 4/3 x2 TC, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro, f11 ISO 250, hand-held.

I now believe this to be Andrena cineraria, not Melecta albifrons.
