Mini Challenge # 311: Central composition

edited December 30, 2020 in The Dgrin Challenges

We all know the "so-called" rules of composition like rule of thirds, golden section, Fibonacci spiral etc.
We're also taught to not put the subject or horizon in the middle since it gives less pleasing results and can be boring.

So this mini is about showing that central compositions (with or without the horizon in the middle) can still give nice photo's.

Here's a few of my attempts that I think came out quite well, allthough the compositions are all very "central" and don't follow some of the above classic "rules"

Street corner

Church ceiling

Covered bridge

Mushroom

Looking forward what you can show me that is composed in a central manner, good luck!
This mini will be open for ~2,5 weeks and close on Saturday Jan 16 at noon (NWE time)

And if you haven't participated before, please take a look at the un-official rules here: https://dgrin.com/discussion/248032/mini-challenge-un-official-rules#latest

Hi Pieter, great theme! Since I was the last winner, this time I'd like to enter just for fun and not for consideration. These were all taken in the course of this past year.

    1) Sunflower on a sea of yellow

    2) Allee on a fall bike ride

    3) Snail seeking protection

You're going to have a hard time judging this one Pieter! Here are my 3.

    1, Daffodil

    1. Snow - digitized film from 1958 when I got my first 35 mm camera

    2. Feet

I found it relatively easy to find a good photo that was a close-up of some object - a waffle, a flower, a face etc. which could be easily centered. Also a radial object and be centered as can a photo with leading lines. I was trying to find a photo with a long visible horizon which would work- like this

but for this kind of photo it just doesn't work well to have it centered

Great theme for a mini, and I love the images! Who needs rules when you have inspiration!? These three are from 2020, and all are images where I deliberately centered the composition.

    1. reflection and vanishing point

    1. Hedging cedars in snow.

    1. Begonias through beveled window

Centered Composition, like everyone else, is a real challenge for me.
It is amazing that while looking for centered comps, I found so many that were not. ROT was well indoctrinated in me.
So here are a few I found in B&W

Sonoran Desert Inn, located in Ajo, Arizona is a converted k-12 Grammar School campus into a hotel of sorts.
I stayed in what looked to be a kindergarten classroom. An adventure for any traveler.

Window in a Stone wall on an Old West Style hotel called "The El Rancho" in Gallup, NM.

Well it looks like I am posting Hotels today...
This next B&W is the Old "Strater Hotel" Built in 1887, located in Durango, Colorado.

One more image, Not for consideration in this mini, but it is a centered comp.
This image to brings a smile to my face.
This is "The Lovers". Saguaro Cactus, Frolicking around "Organ Pipe Cactus SP".
They are not so out of place, as you can see, But they are the only ones engaged.
I found a painting on a wall in the town of Ajo, Arizona, a few miles from these Saguaro that depicts these two as... "The Lovers".

Thank you for an unusual theme for this mini, Pieter. Took a while to find some entries, but here are a few.

    1) Island seen on the way to Alaska

    2) Lion resting in Kruger National Park

    3) Ceiling detail in Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere in Lyon, France

I have been unable to find what time zone NWE time is in.

Yes, I couldn't find NWE time either. If my images were added too late, happy to have them entered just for fun.

Since Pieter is based in Belgium, I assume it is Northwest Europe time?

  • grandmaRgrandmaR Registered Users Posts: 1,941 Major grins

That's what I thought too, but it wasn't on the official list I looked at.

This mini is now closed, now it's up to me to do the judging. I hope to do that today or tomorrow.

P.S.: NWE time is indeed North-West European time, which is GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) +1. The acronym is used a lot around here, never knew it was not an "official" time zone designation.

I don't know if it is official or not. I just couldn't find it. Google kept asking me if I meant NEW instead of NWE
