Very nice job. I know just how skittish these things are. I've been chasing a bunch of them around here for the last 2 years.
Your image is about 25% crop on a 10D with, I assume, your 70-200. That means you were quite close, in GBH terms. So, you must have done something right during the creep up on the bird! Good jog on that.
Even so, that bird knew you were there and was not real happy about it. The head/neck extended the way it is - that's the pose they strike when they are on "high alert."
