Uploading Problems? Help Us Help You.

Hi everyone,

Some of you have been experiencing problems with our uploaders lately. We're really sorry for the trouble, but be assured we're taking steps right now to fix the issues and improve the uploading experience. In order to help troubleshoot better, can you please answer, as fully as possible, the following questions?

1. What Browser are you running - e.g., IE6, Firefox 1.5, Safari?
2. What Platform - PC or MAC?
3. Are you running any security software, firewall software, anti-virus or adblocking software, and if so, the specifics?
4. Are you able to upload with any of the uploaders successfully?
5. For the problem you are experiencing when photos don't upload, can you please detail for us the exact behavior you are seeing? Especially important are any error messages you are receiving, and the exact uploader used.
6. Can you please give us a traceroute report from you to us? Click here to get step-by-step on how to run a traceroute

Remember, there are still file type and size limitations, that sometimes cause "false bug" reports:
http://www.smugmug.com/help/upload-photos we allow 8mb files for standard and power customers, 16mb files for pros. 48 Megapixels max for all customers. This last is pixel dimensions (e.g., 6000 px by 4000px is 24megapixels).

Also, when dragging files into the Univ Drag and Drop, remember that "thumbs.db" can cause problems so avoid dragging that one...

If you were happily using the Windows Drag and Drop, you'll find it, near the bottom, under "legacy uploaders" - we're sorry about that and we're working to put that back in a more prominent link.

The bottomline - for most folks - nothing should really change - though you may have to click that extra link to get back to your windows drag and drop uploader.

Please reply to this post with any issues, questions, and data points from above. Thank you very much!

We appreciate your help while we work through this.

    1. IE6

    2. PC

    3. uploaded at work, not sure. I assume there are firewalls etc.

    4. When upload at home can use the green smuggy java guy. get 12031 error from time to time but connection might be bad. Can only try the legacy windows uploader at work since can't download the java applet needed for the other.

    5. The legacy windows uploader. Try to upload file get red "can't process file message" upload same file then it works. Try to upload file, get same message then upload same file and works. (only doing one pic at a time a little over 2 mb)

    6. can't send this since happened on work computer

    7. hip hip hooray for bringing the windows drag and drop more prominently. Providing of course it starts to work better.

I've had nothing but trouble with the universal uploader in both IE and FF. I can see the green smuggy, but that's as far as I get. Here's the info:

Win XP Pro SP2, IE6 or FF1.5. I run Avast AV, Windows Firewall, Ad-Aware SE for spyware. I'm on a cable modem that generally screams.

In IE, I get the Java sunburst splash, then the green smuggy. When I drop a file on it, the cursor changes to an arrow with a small rectangle under it. I seem to recall that it used to have a plus sign in it, but it doesn't now and I may be mistaken. After a while doing nothing it returns this error in a window titled "An Error Was Encountered":
java.io.IOException: Server returned an unrecognized response
Same happens when I use the browse button instead of dragging and dropping.

In the other thread about this issue with FF, the suggestion was to remove Java and reload it through FF, then go and change the applet tag to put a check in the FF checkbox. I have followed all the instructions but no matter what I do, it will not allow me to set that checkbox. The box for IE is checked, however. The Java site test says that I have the latest version of Java installed and running properly.

The legacy IE uploader works fine, except for the 100MB limit. The standard uploader works fine, limited as it is. I have used Send To Smugmug in the past, but I uninstalled it. It seemed to run much slower than the drag-n-drop IE uploaded did (like 5 times slower).

    I'll post a traceroute in a sec.

    EDIT:

Just un-installed the java application and when i then click add photos it gets re-installed. IE then just hangs again and locks up. So i am currently unable to upload any of the photos i want to at present.

    Hi guys

Well, as you know, we don't really pre-announce much around here. I can tell you, that we're taking steps to do two things:

    1) make things more accessible

    2) improve the error handling, etc

    3) we're keen on having a newer, better, faster, more robust uploader. No promises on when but this whole issue is critically important to us.

Thanks for your patience while we work through it.

I did a search for that but couldnt find it, so i installed firefox instead. At first this didnt work either so i removed the java application and then reinstalled it via firefox, this has allowed me to upload the photos now. So maybe the problem is related to IE?

I'll let you know if i have anymore problems thumb.gif

If you see the green smuggy after you click 'add photos', look near the top, it says "add photos to XXXXXXX (not the uploader you wanted? we have others!)"

click on the last part, it will take you to a screen where you can select the uploader of your choice. Down at the bottom you can choose between several legacy uploaders, choose 'internet explorer'

Ubfortunately it wasnt getting that far otherwise i would have tried that. When i was clicking on add photos, IE would just hang and the sandtimer would come up whilst still displaying the gallery i wanted to add photos to. I have tried leaving it for up to 5 minutes and still it doesnt make it to the 'smuggy' page.

The Adblock extension with the filterset.G updates.
    4. Are you able to upload with any of the uploaders successfully?

The only other uploader that works for intel-based macs is the standard uploader and that didn't work either.

When I used the uploader formerly known as the beta uploader I dragged my image into the box, got the upload status bar, the upload finished, I got the message in the box that the upload was successful and it went into my upload log. I went to the gallery and saw the processing image icon (whoah a lamborgini diablo just went by my window!). The icon stayed around for an unusually long time and after a while of refreshing every so often the processing image icon disappeared and I got a message that this was a brand new gallery with no photos. When I used the standard uploader I never got the image processing icon or anything else in the gallery. The gallery in question is here and I was just uploading one out of camera, sRGB, large fine quality, jpg.

    missing files
I used the universal uploader for the first time the last couple of nights. I had several files missing from my batch of uploads. I dragged and dropped from Windows explorer onto the smuggy applet. When I checked the upload log, I found that smugmug thought the files were the wrong format which was not the case. I uploaded .jpgs. The .jpgs were under 3 MB and some were well under 1 MB.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and I used the latest non-beta IE to upload. Normally I use Firefox, but I normally use the legacy IE uploader when I have several new photos to load. I missed the link to the old one when I uploaded. The legacy one works fine. If I use only have a couple of photos to upload, I used the standard html one with no problems. I use ZoneAlarm for my software firewall. I'm using AVG as my virus scanner/shield.

I'm not at home so I can't give a relevent trace route right now.

    Hope this helps.

    Uploading still a bit buggy
I'm currently uploading some pics with the Java (universal) uploader.

    Browser: IE6.0
    OS: Windows XP SP2

The problem is that i still get some socket time-out exceptions, which forces me to start the upload again (luckily i can view the log and see which pics have been uploaded so far):
    java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect
     at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method)

     at F.a(Unknown Source)
     at n.a(Unknown Source)
     at n.a(Unknown Source)
     at G.run(Unknown Source)

Also, every time when one pictures finishes uploading and it moves to the next, this exception is thrown. Good thing is, this exception is caught and handled, since the upload continues normally:
    java.lang.Exception: Stack trace

     at n.a(Unknown Source)
     at n.a(Unknown Source)
     at G.run(Unknown Source)

Another problem is more usability related:
When dropping files on the uploader, it can take upto a minute before the uploader reacts and shows the 'Upload in Progress' window. It seems nothing happens. When dropping the files again (before the 'Upload in Progress' window appears), the upload process may start twice (i get two 'Upload in Progress' windows)... not so good.

When dropping the files again (before the 'Upload in Progress' window appears), the upload process may start twice (i get two 'Upload in Progress' windows)... not so good.

I was having the same problem, so the other night I finally went into remove programs on my PC and removed the Java application, turns out there were 2, so I got rid of both of them.

I logged back onto my Smug account, reloaded the Universal Uploader, along with the latest Java application. I have loaded about 1000 pics since, only had one pic with an error..half gray...and no, I say no, socket time out, lost connections or anything else like I was having before.

So maybe, just maybe that did the trickne_nau.gif

    Hey Jeffro,

I would be pretty confident that you have solved your problem. When you have multiple versions of java installed....you really need to know what u are doing to stop conflicts between versions.

    Well done :D

I am getting the same error if I try to load more than 100MB iin one go. IS this a feature or a bug. So now I use send2smugmug instead of universal uploader, but unfortunately no such thing exists for linux yet(except that python script).

Not all uploaded pics appearing (only 2 of 4)
I tried to avoid uploading or keywording any pics this week due to all the issues I am reading about. But, I decided to try to upload 4 pics to a new gallery via StarExplorer...
    Created new gallery, fine

uploaded 4 pics without error, good....

till I checked on my smugmug site... Only 2 of the pics showed up (the first one uploaded and the last one)
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/1519736

so there are upload probs, no stats, keywording probs, and map this probs. Hopefully this is being looked at. First time I've had pic upload problems.

Windows 2000 - StarExplorer log - no errors.

I noticed 2 of the files that didn't upload were reported on the upload log as errors (not jpg, mov, etc)

I uploaded the SAME files again via Universal uploader and it worked this time. headscratch.gif
