Raw conversion timing? Benchmark 'em

Hi guys,

I am looking at doing a lot of raw conversion my prefered program is PhaseOne CaptureOne, however, having done a few tests here I found that Adobe Camera Raw was about 4 times faster in converting Canon 1Ds files to 16bit (64mb in size)

what is everyone else using and what times are you getting, on what box (be it *nix, Mac or PC)

suggestion: take 10 of your raw files, make adjustments process them in your prefered application. no need for stop watch, look at the first file properties and the last (time created), take the two times and deduct the difference, better submit the two times and it can be varified.

record the total megabyte size of your converted files (all 10)

what do we need to know
A) OS....and platform (eg. MacTel running windows with a virtual *nix on top)

B) CPU...speed and number of processor and cores
Memory..amount, ECC, speed of ram....what you may think is relevant
Harddisk sub system (eg. scsi sata I or II, or other)

C) Converter..(AdobeCameraRaw, CaptureOne, Bibble..just name it & version)

D) Camera model and brand
File 8 or 16bit
Total megabytes of all 10 files

E) and finally your time, perhaps with begin and end time, so people can draw their own conclusion

this may give a picture of which converter is fasterst, though it may not be the most workflow friendly!!! the later is vital in your digital darkroom, further it is important in a DAM system

thanks you very much for taking the time

I'll go off memory since I have been running a bunch of batches lately. Bibble Pro 4.7b, XP Home SP2, AMD X2 4200+, 2GB RAM, SATA II drives (data is RAID0+1, OS is JBOD), 20D files to 16-bit TIFF. 32 files took about 11 mintues, so approx 20sec each.

While it was doing that, I was in my DAM processing a different batch of images, gotta love dual-core!
