Hello,

I know there has been a discution about changing sizes or adding new sizes like XL. Don't know what the final outcome was, but anyway i see the size of L- photos in portrait has changed. I use a 17'' LCD and the new size is really to small. Also i used the linking-option to forums very often and for that purpose the previous size was much better.

Is there any option to display portrait sized pictures in a bigger size then the actual L-size?

    my 2 cents on portraits
    Andy -

Just my two cents. There are a lot of folks that have left comments requesting bigger portrait photos. I'm not in that group.

The photo needs to fit on the screen without scrolling regardless of orientation.

Captions complicate this. When I left captions below the photo, my viewers seldom saw them. When I moved them to the top, they read them, but a lot of the photo is "below the fold".

I think the guys that are saying that monitors are getting bigger live in a different, more technical world.

Most of my family members have computers purchased in the last 3 years and the monitors are set at 1024. Some of the children of the older family members have set their monitors to 800 so they can see better.

I work in a company with over 2000 employees. Many people ask for a larger screen, but only a handful outside of the IT area are set for larger than 1024. They can't read text when the monitors are set at higher resolutions.

Finally - I monitor the data from our corporate web site and the grand majority of our customer set their monitors for 1024 and 800, with larger sizes coming in a very distant third.

Everyone's viewer community will have a different composition, but I can safely say there are not very many monitors that have a square or portrait orientation.

Please continue to fit images into the 800x600 box. Feel free to offer additional option.

    Thanks, gs
    See you later, gs

    Hi georges :D

I don't think we'll get rid of the smaller options. We hope to offer choices to display at the larger sizes. I really like the custom image url thing, it's a nice feature for folks that are embedding photos - pick a size, any size :D

I agree with you, and choice is good, eh?

    Hello again,

The custom link size looks like a solution for linking to a forum if you want to post a larger size then the L-size. But how does that new size get created? Doesn't the photo looses any quality by resizing it?

It would only lose quality if you've disabled originals, in which case if you asked for a larger size than our -L, we'd have to upres from the -L. It's all in the blog entry I linked above :)

I complained quite a bit when smugmug decided to change the large portrait sizes... until they came out with the custom url size feature... problem solved.

the custom url image size feature is one of the coolest features smugmug has added... especially if you customize your site (only $15 to upgrade to power user..)

Thanks Andy, I just posted a road test of this custom size feature on DP review to test it out.
