Flash on P&S cameras

Hi all,
got a very newbie question here. I'm new to photography and I'm still shaping my technique while learning my toys (Fujifilm S5600). Anyway, after about one week of intense shooting I finally decided to give the built in flash a try and was veeeeeery disappointed. I shot in Manual mode 99% of the time in order to fully understand all parameters and how they interact. So, in M mode my camera has three flash modes: OFF, RedEye and ON (forced). The results are very poor with flash and would like to know if it's better to leave it off as much as possible or if I'm doin' something wrong. While lurkin' on the net I discovered lots of different flash techniques (bouncing and so on) but these are obviously impossible with the fixed built in I got. Would some sort of diffusing filter help out? Something like a piece of clear plastic put in front of the flash? Is it possible to damage the flash if you try and stop the light from flashing directly on the subject?

:):
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
