    I've looked at that piece several times now and I fail to see anything
    great in it. Many of the photos evoke thought, like that of the soldiers
    at Fort Hood or maybe Sean Penn holding the American flag with "Think"
    written on his fingers. Rove's portrait is, in a word, creepy but hardly
    unique.

    As a collection, I wasn't moved nearly as much as I had hoped. I guess
    with Avedon, I expected simple and evocative images. Like that in the
    Kenneth Cole ad a few pages before Democracy.

    I enjoyed looking at the piece and I can't help wondering what it may
    have been had he been able to complete it.

    I was thinking of the photo of past President Carter, in particular. Isn't the editing of that good.

    I feel like Avedon really got Carter, but putting that other guy, the black one, opposite, he looks so much like Carter, I wonder if that is affecting me.

    Senator Obama is the chair of the Health and Human Services commitee and
    concerns himself with welfare and ethics issues. One of President Carter's
    greatest achievments since leaving office is his work with Habitat for Humanity.
    President Carter is also called upon by others to help with difficult negotiations.

    Perhaps the arrangement is meant to contrast the two politicians?

    Many of the pairings invite some sort of comparison.
