If you use GoDaddy, I had to change the A name record so that the IP address is: 63.81.134.23

Took about 12 hours to resolve correctly.

I'm sure the change is the same across other hosting\parking companies.

I think if you change the TTL setting for the to 15 minutes (900), wait 12 hours then change it the new changes should propigate faster as the DNS caches should only hold the old info for as long as the TTL is set in seconds.

Then the next day change it back.. to the orginal value.

Do you also have hosting service with GoDaddy. I subscribed to their hosting service also, although I am not using it yet. I think if I enter the above IP for Smugmug then I wouldn't be able to use their hosting services?? Is there a way around this issue?

I use GoDaddy to manage my domain name. I do not have them hosting my site.

This is my setting in Total DNS control and MX records:

I don't think this will work for me. I don't want to experiment right now since I have people looking at some galleries this week.

Andy - hopefully, you will read this and maybe you can help. I think I saw a thread where you helped somebody else with a similar issue.

A record can be set to our IP on godaddy.
    CNAME record to www.smugmug.com

Thank you Andy. I am thinking if I do this, there is no point for me to really continue my hosting subscription. I guess ... in the past I thought I will have a simple front end and then point to my smugmug pages. There are so many things that we can do at smugmug ....

However, if you really want to have your own front, you could do something like fellow dgrinner, T4Tots, did. Go to http://tinafolsomphotography.com/

Have your gallery page point to your smugmug account. Maybe create a sub-domain... photos.yourwebsite.com and configure DNS.

I have this same problem and just thought that this was just how it was. Did not know it could be fixed. I used Joker to purchase my name (BCphoto.biz) but customers can only get there by putting the WWW first. They can't just put bcphoto.biz

I did not see the answer in this thread for how to fix. So can you advise me too?

    My site is www.mexiwolf.com

    Thanks for any help

Looks like you are using GoDaddy. If so, go back and read posts 3 and 6 in this thread.

Looks like it is working. thumb.gif

    Taken from http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts:

I don't want my visitors to have to type www...

If you just want your web address to be http://yourdomain.com instead of something like http://www.yourdomain.com, you can use the symbol instead of inserting the subdomain when setting it up. (A subdomain is the part the proceeds yourdomain.com — www is a common subdomain.) Registrars use the @ symbol to indicate the lack of a domain (rather than just leaving it blank).
Some registrars don't allow CNAMEs with @ symbols. They force you to use an A record instead. The basic principle is the same, but instead of pointing to www.smugmug.com it points to our IP address.
Gotcha: Our IP address might change in the future, causing an A record to break. For this reason we suggest trying a CNAME record first.
Our current IP address is 63.81.134.23

    Sorry for the stupidity.

Where does the @ symbol go?

At godaddy or in smugmug somewhere?

It's in GoDaddy. Total DNS control and MX records:

See post 6 in this thread. You have to click add new A record.

I used www.eurodns.com to register my domain (www.ultimatefris.be) and I tried doing the @ thing, but now when I type just "ultimatefris.be" it brings me to the smugmug homepage and not my page. My dns looks like this:

Hmmm. I'm not sure. I assume your settings are correct within your control panel because I can hit your site. www.ultimatefris.be.

Maybe email help@smugmug.com They may be able to help you.

Some domain hosts do it right, others don't. You're set up properly in your SmugMug control panel, not much else we can do I'm afraid. If you wish us to work with your domain host, let us know.

and your domain, ultimatefris.be, is very catchy. I think I've seen it elsewhere, e.g., at the FredMiranda forum.

I thought so, but apparently it goes over most people's heads. I don't have business cards so the conversation goes like this almost every single time:

"Hey are you going to put those online somewhere?"
    "Yeah, I have a website, it's www.ultimatefris.be"
"wait, what? Fris, like with a Z?"
    "no, with an s"
    "what's with the .be?"
"it makes it frisbee... it's ultimatefris.be"
    "ohhh"

Hate to pile on here, but I've had this issue as well for over a year. I read the SmugMug tutorial and still can't figure out how to correct it. It's a shame that I've allowed myself to just get used to saying to people "my website is easy, it's just robkeaton.com, like my name....OH, but you have to type WWW DOT robkeaton.com, or else it doesn't work...I don't know why...I'm stupid.

In my case I called GoDaddy so I don't mess things up, and when they touched it they messed it up also. Maybe the tech didn't know what he was doing. I told him - just set it back the way it was. One day ....
