race car... rail... dragster... its got 4 wheels, a huge engine, and a nut behind the wheel -> car :) Just happens to be the fastest one on the planet :)

Also known as "Top Fuel" dragsters. The other fun ones to watch are the "Funny Car" races in the evening - flames come out of the sides of the cars. The flames, along with noise make for quite an impressive spectacle!

(I used to work for Summit Racing - a company that supplies alot of the parts for these kind of cars and also sponsors the races and certain drivers. If it wasn't for that little chapter of my life, I wouldn't know a thing about these cars! About ten years ago I got to hang out at the start line of the Spring Nationals in New Jersey! Kind of fun!)

I was going to ask where you took the photo - but I see that your from Englishtown...So, I think I can guess!

Got this shot over the weekend on the CT river and it needed a lot of cropping anyway, so I post here for the assignment. We could hardly tell it was a bird at first with the naked eye. Between the focal length of the lens (280mm) and the crop, the detail really comes out. I know it's not very extreme, so I'll probably try something else later.

    OK, I'm in...
[I crop alot anyway, and usually ask myself what can be missing to make this pic better?eek7.gifrolleyes1.gif ] I like to make abstracts out of crops [not this one tho..] I get what you mean Ginger...
We had a guest speaker at our local club this week who showed us wonderful crops, proving that minimal can be better.

    Couple more
First pair is a lancer statue in my kids' HS:

    01: Lancer - view:

    95204017-L.jpg

In addition to the foot zoom, lens zoom, and, finally, the actual crop, I also decided to have a little fun with it in ACR:

    02: Lancer - crop (rawflow):

    95204031-L.jpg

Another pair from the same HS grounds:

    03: Flower tree:

    95204079-L.jpg

04: And the from from that tree - crop (also aided by foot and lens zoom):

    Cheers!

I'm late to the party, Nik, I've been on the road, and just returned home Monday after 3300 miles in the saddle.

We stayed in Lamar Colorado one night, riding in just at sunset - sweet light. I shot this sunset with a Lumix DMC-LX1 - Hence the noise. But as I examined the scene, I saw this detail as much more interesting
    [imgl]http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95303655-M.jpg[/imgl] [imgr]http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95308087-M.jpg[/imgr]

The next morning we rode to Bent's Fort in SE Colorado in heavy fog.

Here is a shot of a saddle hanging in a doorway in Bent's Fort. I loved the soft side lighting, but not the whole image...

    [imgl]http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95304006-L.jpg[/imgl]

As I chimped the image, I realized that there were better choices than the whole scene...

    [imgr]http://Pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/95303723-M.jpg[/imgr]

    Or even
    95307439-M.jpg

I would like to repeat Ginger's comment that continuing to look deeper into each scene we photograph is a way of "seeing deeper" that we should try to emulate until it becomes second nature.

I like the saddle shots, always had a passion for this type of leather (is it called rawhide?)

And I totally agree with your last sentence about looking deeper.
After all, this is what this particular assignment is all about:-) :):
