Quick compatibilty question...

hi. I hope this is the right forum to ask this but I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to know for sure if a lens is compatible with a camera?

I am specifically interested in finding out if the Pentax 80-200mm f/4.7-5.6
lens will work with the Canon Digital Rebel.

I am not looking for reviews of the lens, but I just want to know if it will work with my camera.

Edited to add: after looking some more I think it might only be for pentax film slr but I am not sure so any input is still appreciated! Thanks!

Pentax has a Pentax K-mount, Canon's mount is different. Sorry!

Well, Andy is partly correct. No you cannot just attach it as if the Canon body were a Pentax body. However, if you really, really want to use that lens, you CAN use an adapter to make it work. Sort of. In manual mode. Look here: http://www.cameraquest.com/frames/4saleReos.htm

This is one nice thing about the EOS mount--just about anything else can be adapted to it.

The question is: is it worth bothering? Yeah it can be done, but the converter costs more than the lens (now that I've checked prices on that one). I think even though you could do it, the better option would be to sell off the Pentax and use it to buy one meant for the camera--Canon's 75-300, Sigma or Tamoron's 70-300. From the reviews they all sound about equal to the Pentax & are in a similar price range. Or save up a bit and get the 70-200/f4.

thanks for the info. I am notgoing to bother with an adapter-I jsut wanted to check before I made my next move. If the adapter was cheaper-maybe but I would rather just do what I got to do and get one that works without an adapter!

What application do you have for the lens? What do you intend to use it for?

A good lens for the dRebel in that range is the Sigma 70-200mm, f2.8, and you can buy it for around $800.

I have an older version of the Tamron, and I shot some stuff last Saturday in broad daylight, and I would compare the quality of the Tamron at f8 as slightly worse than a Canon 70-200mm, f2.8L wide open, so (some) Canon "L" lenses really do have a reason for their extra price. Then again, the Tamron was an extra 100mm or so, so it wasn't a fair test at all.
